OVERVIEW

Fortress Building Products is seeking a Code Specialist / Laboratory Technician to join our Innovations team and serve as the in-house expert on applicable building codes. This position will be responsible for facilitating in-house and 3rd party laboratory testing from early development stages to the start of production to ensure our products meet international compliance standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Stay up to date on code and code changes.
    • Attend Code Meetings
      • Deck Code Coalition (DCC)
      • International Code Council (ICC)
  • Facilitate in-house testing
    • Build Samples
      • Mechanical Aptitude
    • Assist with Beta Installations
    • Develop Stress-Strain curves for new materials
  • Use Solidworks and Solidworks FEA to analyze designs
    • Failure analysis
    • Recommend design changes based on test results.
  • Facilitate 3rd party testing
    • Point of contact for outside laboratories
    • Develop test plans with outside laboratories
    • Schedule testing
    • Schedule product sampling
    • Attend onsite testing as required
  • File and maintain test results is a database
    • Keep test reports up to date
    • Translate test data into usable information
  • Patent searches
    • Use Google Patents and other online tools to search prior art.
      • Ability to analyze patent claims and understand how they relate to products designed at Fortress Building Products.

Education/Experience/Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a focus on material sciences
  • Proficient with SolidWorks software
  • Solidworks PDM experience is a plus
  • 1-2 years related work experience with Solidworks
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
  • Knowledge of drawing documentation standards
  • Applies knowledge effectively in team environment
  • Able to accept and integrate constructive feedback
  • Requires ability to be self-motivated and work independently as well as in teams
  • Must be able to manage multiple activities, maintain organization, and operate in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment
  • Strong ability to pay close attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and proceed with objectives with minimal supervision
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • A proven ability to develop, cultivate, and maintain relationships with both internal and external customers
