Summary of Role
The Financial Analyst is accountable for driving results in a fast-paced environment by providing decision support through financial modelling, business case analysis and financial/management reporting.  The Financial Analyst participates in reviews of transactions, disbursements, and financial reports; evaluates financial implications of specific business decisions/opportunities; and advises management accordingly to support targeted financial performance achievement.  The position ensures proper staff training and conducts key required training.  The position ensures that deliverables are met, or expectations are proactively managed towards alternative solutions.  The position works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.  In addition, the Financial Analyst exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.  The position requires superior leadership behaviors of the Sterling core competencies and non-negotiables, as well as expertise in functional competencies included in this position profile.

Essential Functions

  • Provide decision support through financial modelling, business case analysis and financial/ management reporting
  • Evaluate financial implications of specific business decisions/opportunities and advise management accordingly to support targeted financial performance achievement
  • Exercise judgment to determine appropriate course of action and prepare business recommendations based on sound financial analysis
  • Create analysis using the Business Information systems to drive the financial performance of the business
  • Participate in financial planning, budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Participate in the monthly closing process
  • Provide insightful analytics that anticipate change and drive decision making
  • Provide effective and timely financial information, thoughtful business insights/analytics and business performance evaluations to support corporate leaders’ effectiveness in creating and executing strategy and operating plans
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with all levels of the company to achieve corporate objectives
  • Implement and monitor cost/management accounting system and procedures
  • Evaluate and ensure accuracy of cost of sales and related variances
  • Evaluate appropriateness of all inventory valuations and reserve balances
  • Provide oversight for plant costing activities including material, labor and overhead standards
  • Analyze changes in product design, raw materials and manufacturing methods to determine effects on cost and recommend alternatives as appropriate
  • Update product costs during annual cost roll and throughout year when appropriate
  • Analyze material and manufacturing variances, prepare reports and provide department owners with recommendations
  • Perform cost analyses and develop models for special projects including free cash flow analysis
  • Provide management with reports analyzing cost drivers impacting the profitability of products and processes
  • Provides relevant fiscal information to the management team

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in finance, Accounting or Business and 2+ years Finance/Cost Accounting experience
  • Progressive Financial Analysis experience preferred
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
