Pioneer Valley Books is seeking an experienced and energetic Human Resources Manager who is enthusiastic about building teams, creating positive employee relations, and reviewing, developing, and implementing policies.

This position serves as a true partner, consultant, and adviser to team members and management on human resources. We seek someone who has strong relationship-building skills, is able to clearly communicate company policies/programs/procedures, and can provide leadership around the development, assessment, and optimization of HR operational processes. This position will be exciting for someone who shares our mission to ensure every student becomes a lifelong reader and who can ensure adaptability to changing business needs for an organization that is becoming increasingly complex. 
 
KEY DUTIES
  • Team AdvocacyFulfills the role of employee and company advocate to balance decision making appropriately, and serves as the point of contact on HR topics, questions, and issues for all employees, managers, and executive team.
  • Recruitment: Collaborates with executive team and department managers on workforce planning and talent development, refining hiring plans and recruitment strategies to hire and retain high-caliber employees.
  • Team Building: Partners with department managers to create a meaningful work environment for all employees.
  • Compensation: Acts as a senior member of our compensation committee, tasked with the development and management of compensation structure and strategy across all lines of business. 
  • Policy Review: Ensures policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Employee Development: Coordinates the implementation and execution of the performance management system. Partners with supervisors/managers to ensure the performance management system is compliant, equitable, and timely, and provides opportunities for employee growth. Handles employee relations counseling, outplacement counseling, and exit interviewing in accordance with company policy, legal requirements, and organizational precedence.
  • Workplace Health and Safety: Collaborates with the safety department to support a safe work environment that complies with regulatory requirements and encourages a healthy work environment. 
  • Skill Building: Partners with department managers to identify learning and development needs, and works to develop and implement initiatives and plans to address skill gaps.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in human resources or business
  • Five or more years of professional human resources experience in at least three of the following HR disciplines: compensation, benefits, employee/labor relations, training/development, EEO, and/or organizational development
  • Minimum of three years in a management role; experience building and/or supervising an HR team a plus
  • Advanced software skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); advanced skills and comfort with remote communication tools (Zoom, Slack, etc.). Experience with SmartDraw considered an additional asset

  • Be an approachable and thoughtful partner and facilitate decision making. Must have a strong internal customer focus and collaborative style and a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Have effective platform/presentation skills and be a successful and creative problem solver.
  • Demonstrate proven ability to juggle multiple projects and competing priorities; must be a highly motivated, self-directed individual who will also thrive in a team environment.
Pioneer Valley Books offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, as well as a small, welcoming pet-friendly office environment. Our office is located in Northampton, MA, and the HR Manager is expected to be on-site a minimum of three days/week.
