    Purpose of Job
    The Public Relations Manager is responsible for developing PR plans, media and reputation building strategies; and integrated communications campaigns to enhance the Hospital’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally. Serves as a key member of the Howard University Office of University Communications and the Adventist HealthCare Public Relations & Marketing Teams. Plays a key role in planning, developing and managing a wide range of communications strategies.  The PR Manager will serve as a lead point of contact for all (internal & external) Hospital communications; will develop strategies to effectively engage and foster relationships with the news media; influencing key audiences through the storytelling of good works and community relations initiatives. Will work with the Director of PR to develop strategic communications plans that includes institutional positioning and messaging, media relations, issues management, and crisis communications.

    Required Qualifications: Competencies
    • Superb verbal and interpersonal skills are essential as is an ability to think creatively and generate new ideas.     • Possess a demonstrated track record of success cultivating positive news stories, media relations and shaping public opinion and discourse in print, broadcast media and grassroots PR efforts with measured results.
    • Excellent oral communicator and writer with the ability to produce communications of all types, including press releases and media pitches, news announcements, creative content, speeches and talking points, feature stories, newsletters, website content and other promotional materials as required.
    • Fluent in the use of various social media platforms and able to develop plans for incorporating social media into overall PR and marketing efforts.
    • Demonstrated ability to think and act with superb strategic insight and judgment.
    • Can develop compelling and impactful content that reflects the Hospital’s brand and strategic objectives by employing a wide range of tactics and PR tools to ensure that key messages and stories reach target audiences.
    • Strong writing and editing skills; must be proficient in AP writing style, including news, promotional and creative writing. Writing must demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy of information audience, voice, tone, and nuance.
    • Results oriented, enthusiastic, resourceful and creative with a can-do, positive attitude. Possess the ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

    • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
    Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
     
    Education Minimum formal education required, including degree level (e.g. Bachelor’s) and type/field (e.g. business, health care, etc.) Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, or a closely related field.

    Will accept related experience, education or training in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the job.
    Experience Minimum years of experience required, and what type of experience qualifies Eight (8) years of full-time professional, public relations experience in communications, media relations, journalism or related fields. Higher education or experience within corporate, healthcare, non-profit and agency preferred.
    Supervisory/Management Experience Minimum years of supervisory/management experience required  
    Certification and/or Licensure Any required certifications or licensures required  
    Other Any additional background requirement A willingness to work during non-standard business hours.

    Required Skills

    Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, or a closely related field.

    Eight (8) years of full-time professional, public relations experience in communications, media relations, journalism or related fields. Higher education or experience within corporate, healthcare, non-profit and agency preferred.
