ABOUT THE POSITION
Designs mechanical, structural, and electro-mechanical products and systems and supervises and technically directs other salaried or hourly personnel performing same functions.  Supervises and technically directs design modelers, consults with manufacturing/fabrication, installation, of products and systems as assigned.  Works in field providing field engineering as required or directs others to do the same.  Provides support to service team, sales team, product management team, manufacturing team, operational excellence team, and other teams as required.  Develops subject matter expertise pertaining to assigned equipment and related processes.  Responsibilities may include design modeling.

Key Deliverables
  • Design mechanical and electro-mechanical products and systems as required.
  • Provide layout drawings and sketches to domestic Engineering Department design modelers for completion of detail drawings and check detail drawings provided by design modelers overseeing revisions as required.
  • Work closely with manufacturing staff and third party fabricators as required to ensure proper construction techniques.
  • Recommend and implement design changes to equipment so as to reduce manufacturing costs and improve product performance.
  • Assess third party providers of fabrication, controls, electrical, and construction services as required.
  • Inspect equipment prior to shipping to verify proper construction and direct resolutions to discrepancies.

Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Present technical presentations on proper equipment operation and maintenance according to subject matter expertise. Effective public speaking skills are expected.
  • Work with end users of equipment, in conjunction with service personnel, and sales to resolve complaints, liaise with engineering counterparts, and recommend and oversee field projects /repairs as necessary.
  • Provide recommendations to sales and end users of equipment on modifying existing equipment for successful equipment upgrades.
  • Travel to customer installations in support of Sales to consult with customers, measure existing equipment, and make layout sketches and drawings of proposed equipment and/or equipment modifications.
  • Follow company policies and procedures as well as safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • Consult with equipment and hardware suppliers to select and evaluate purchased components.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
  • Minimum of four years Engineering undergraduate degree required.
  • Must be fluent in English as well as one or more languages in the assigned region (if applicable).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and computer communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Astec, Inc. equipment, designs, and processes required.
  • Design modeling experience and AutoCAD/SolidWorks capability preferred.
  • Management experience/skills or the ability to develop these skills required.
  • Must be able to work satisfactorily as a team member.

WORK ENVIRONMENT (Select One)
Office
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of injury in an office environment and occasionally a manufacturing shop plant environment.  Duties include a typical office setting including extensive computer work, sitting or standing. Manufacturing Environment
Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock.  The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures.  The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection.
