     A Nurse Resident may be enrolled in the Professional Nurses Clinical Advancement residency program and advances with assistance toward independent responsibility for the safe and effective delivery of patient-centered care.  The Nurse Resident educates patients and family through the continuum of care while also striving to advance their own knowledge and skills through careful consideration of feedback and guidance provided by more senior nurses and the Clinical Nurse Manager.  They use electronic resources to support best practices in patient care.  The Nurse Resident demonstrates professionalism, adheres to ANA standards of practice, and strives to fulfill the Howard University Hospital’s nursing mission, vision and values.  The ability to use equipment and technology correctly is a key Nurse Resident competency. 

     Principle Duties and Responsibilities 

     Patient Centeredness 

    • Coordinates care for patients and families.    

    • Provides patient education throughout the continuum of care and at discharge. (i.e., pain management, medication administration, diabetes management, etc.).    

    • Includes patient in care planning and decision making. 

    Evidence-based Practice 

    • Identifies knowledge gaps and seeks information.     

    • Formulates relevant questions regarding care delivery for specific patient or patient population.      

    • Identifies subject matter experts and evidence-based resources for referral when necessary. 

    Interdisciplinary Care Team Vitality 

    • Demonstrates knowledge of the roles and practice scope of interdisciplinary team members.  

    • Builds trusting, collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary team members.  

    • Works collaboratively with the care team to produce positive outcomes. 

    Quality Improvement and Patient Safety 

    • Uses organizational safety reporting system for near miss and error reporting. 

    • Adheres to policy and safety measures in the delivery of patient care. 

    Use of Information Technologies 

    • Provides safe patient care using systems correctly based on audit data and performance review.  

    • Uses electronic resources to support best practices in patient care. 

    Critical Thinking and Innovation 

    • Applies clinical knowledge and reasoning to clinical and patient care experiences. 

    • Integrates best current evidence into nursing practice at the bedside.   

    • Incorporates current scientific research and proven techniques into daily practice. 

    Value Added Care 

    • Delegates non-nursing duties appropriately (to appropriate person at the appropriate time).    

    • Organizes patient care resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.      

    • Utilizes appropriate supplies (in terms of quality and quantity) for each task. 

     Required Qualifications: Competencies 

    • Able to work in a stressful environment with multiple demands and to respond appropriately 

    • Able to resolve conflicts effectively, prioritize tasks, respond to emergencies, and react calmly 

    • Knowledgeable of professional nursing theory and practice to evaluate care 

    • Knowledgeable of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care 

    • Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment 

    • Able to respond to alarms codes, answering phone, overhead pages, beeper pages 

    • Able to read charts, labels, documentation, policies and procedures 

    • Able to communicate with staff, visitors, patients, and physicians in clear and concise English 

    • Ability to retrieve and interpret data.
