GENERAL SUMMARY: The Senior Accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures. This position assists and reports to the Controller. All accounting staff for Movement Schools report to the Controller, and are members of the Finance team, which leads and manages all daily accounting operations, audit, monthly financial reporting including to state and federal agencies, and annual budgeting for a growing $20-30 million annual revenue budget. This is a newly created position for a growing organization and the ideal candidate will thrive in an entrepreneurial culture. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for implementing efficient technology together with adequate procedures and controls to ensure timely and pristine accounting records as well budgets and dashboards that will inform the strategic direction of the organization.

 

This role will be responsible for ensuring our organization’s success in budgeting, accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. The right candidate MUST possess an advanced understanding of complex journal entries for large organizations (with a preference towards accountants who have experience in the non-profit or governmental arena - preferred, not required.) The right candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, a high attention to detail, and possess a desire and ability to ensure that core deliverables are completed in a timely manner.

 

 Important Note: Advanced Knowledge of Finance and Accounting Fundamentals including but not limited to: Journal Entry Skills, General Ledger Reconciliations and Concepts, Accrual vs. Cash Basis Accounting, Understanding of Financial Statements, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and other items will be heavily tested during the hiring process.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

FINANCIAL AND ACCOUNTING MANAGEMENT:

 

·       Compiling and analyzing financial statements including monthly and annual accounts.

·       Preparing necessary journal entries to be approved by the Controller prior to entry into the accounting software.

      Conduct monthly reviews of the general ledger to ensure proper coding of all accounts payable entries completed.

      Assisting with accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end close.

      Establishing and monitoring the implementation and maintenance of accounting control procedures.

      Assisting with resolving accounting discrepancies and irregularities.

      Continuous management and support of budget and forecast activities.

      Developing and maintaining financial databases.

      Analyzing and advising on business operations including revenue and expenditure trends, financial commitments and future revenues.

      Analyzing financial information to recommend or develop efficient use of resources and procedures, provide strategic recommendations and maintain solutions to business and financial problems.

      Assisting in management of federal, state, county, and other local and private funds.

      AD-HOC financial and accounting projects, tasks, and other administrative or accounting duties as assigned by the CFO, Controller, or Leadership Team

      Assisting with ensuring the management of school cash and plan liquidity needs

      Assisting with ensuring the maintenance and accuracy of a well-documented system of accounting policies and procedures consistent with GAAP, GASB, and/or FASB as applicable for an North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia non-profit public schools

PAYROLL:

      Assisting with ensuring the maintenance and accuracy of payroll accounting and calculations

      Serving as a point of contact for third party payroll processing providers

      Assisting employees with payroll, tax, and related questions

      Assisting with preparing quarterly and annual payroll tax returns and annual W2s and 1099s.

 

AUDIT AND COMPLIANCE ASSISTANCE:

      Creating and submitting mandated state and federal reports

      Conducting periodic internal audits to ensure compliance with cash, grant accounting, and accounts payable/receivable policies and procedures

      Complying with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

      Safeguarding assets and ensure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls and checks across all departments

      Serving as the primary contact during audit season for all audit requests, in coordination with the Controller (including the workers' compensation audit)

      Conducting research on educational laws and trends that pertain to the department as needed

      Assisting with child nutrition submission of monthly claims

 

FINANCIAL REPORTING:

      Assists with developing, improving, and ensuring the timely issuance and completion of accurate financial statements for both internal external stakeholders

      Assists with the creation and maintenance of budgeting and cost management workbooks to assist with budget management, cash management, and working capital requirements

      Assists with the management of annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes

      Reviewing budget variances and report significant issues to management

 

ACCOUNTS PAYABLE AND ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE

      Assists with ensuring that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner and that W9 forms and certificates of insurance are on file

      Assists with ensuring that 1099s and 1096 are processed annually

      Assists with ensuring that accounts receivable are collected promptly

      Assists with ensuring that revenue is recognized accurately and in the correct accounting period

 


EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

      Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in management of financial systems, budgets, financial reporting, financial data analysis, auditing, and providing financial advice, experience working in nonprofits, school districts, or government agencies highly preferred

 

      Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, or a closely related field

 

      Knowledge: Knowledge and experience with Finance & Accounting fundamentals including but not limited to: Journal Entry Skills,  General Ledger Reconciliations and Concepts, Accrual vs. Cash Basis Accounting, Understanding of Financial Statements, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles); Familiar with modern/common ERP and GL systems

 

      Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; experienced using Excel, Word, and other Microsoft products; ability to work well with your coworkers, yet independently with minimal direct supervision.
