    The Quality and Patient Safety Manager reports to the Director of the Quality and Strategic Improvement. Coordinates quality improvement and patient safety activities for Howard University Hospital with the goal of evaluating and improving the quality of patient care.


    The Patient Safety and Regulatory Manager: Full-Time Monday-Friday 8AM-4:30PM

    Pay Range: $52.25-83.60 (actual offer rates are based upon the applicants relevant experience pertaining to the role)

    Responsibilities:

    • Developing, implementing, coordinating, and monitoring performance improvement strategies to improve patient safety, establish evidence-based care, and meet organizational goals. 
    • Manages and educates hospital and system staff on care of patients; consults with management and staff: and communicates evidence based, effective patient safety strategies to others within the hospital organization.
    • Quality Management function facilitates and manages new and ongoing projects specific to the Quality area. Ensures adherence to Department of Health, CMS Conditions of Participation  and The Joint Commission standards across all clinical departments by remaining up to date on relevant standards, conducting staff training in conjunction with clinical leadership, developing protocols and procedures as needed, and performing intermittent chart reviews and audits at clinical sites. Recognizes immediate jeopardy situations that places patients or the hospital at risk.

    Organizational Expectations

    • Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
    • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
    • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
    • Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities
    • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
    • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

    Required Qualifications and Competencies:

    • Knowledge of Joint Commission, DC-DOH and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regulations/requirements
    • Experience with process improvement, patient safety quality improvement methods
    • Experience with designing education tools and conducting educational sessions
    • Strong analytical, research, documentation and report skills necessary.
    • Must have prior experience in: organizational assessment (audit) for regulatory and accreditation compliance, state reporting, DOL and URAC requirements; quality management processes; research, interpretation and/or analysis of abstract and concrete variables.
    • Excellent oral and written communication, report preparation, and presentation skills to both peer and upper level management required.
    • Working knowledge of project management, facilitation of work groups, quality improvement, team meetings and medical equipment and instruments.
    • Ability to foster teamwork by trusting and supporting each other while encouraging collaboration at all levels of the organization. Embraces diversity and demonstrates the ability to work together.
    • Must have the ability to hold in confidence any information regarding guests, personnel, or any other matters which are confidential in nature.

     Education:

    • Bachelor of Science or Arts degree
    • Formal education in healthcare and/or sciences in lieu of degree will also be accepted
    • Master’s Degree or higher preferred

    Experience:
    REQUIRED:

    •        Minimum of two years of experience in accreditation and regulatory compliance issues.

    • Minimum of three years of quality and/or performance improvement experience. 
    • Strong knowledge of clinical operations and relationship management in a healthcare setting.
    • Experience interacting with cross functional teams.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Minimum of five years of supervisory and/or management experience
    • Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, if clinical (i.e. RN, BSN, MD, RT, etc.) (Application for license must be completed within 30 days of employment.)

    • Six Sigma Green Belt or higher-must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

    • CPHQ must be obtained within 18 months of hire


    PREFERRED

    • 5– 7 years of clinical experience in the healthcare industry preferred.
    • Project management experience in the healthcare industry preferred.
    • Proficiency with Companion by Mini-Tab preferred
    • Experience with data analytics a plus
