    To provide Occupational Therapy evaluations, goals , and treatments for referred patients.


    Interacts with immediate staff members, physicians, Hospital officials and the general public.


    Performs a complete OT evaluation on patients referred by physiatrists and department protocol for occupational therapy.

    Reviews medical records, interviews patient/family/others, and administers standardized and non-standardized tests to evaluate the functional level of patients.

    Analyzes and synthesizes evaluation data to identify problems for which occupational therapy intervention is appropriate.

    Identifies long and short term goals, includes patient participation in treatment goals and selects techniques to achieve functional goals.

    Participates in departmental patient planning meetings.

    Maintains appropriate documentation on all patients noting patient problems, response to treatment, treatment plans and goals, and other necessary observations relative to the treatment process. 

    Prepares and presents case studies for Occupational Therapy/ departmental meetings.

    Prepares charge slips, appointment slips and daily log.

    Participates in departmental staff meetings and divisional meetings.

    Participates in Quality Assessment and Improvement activities.

    Provides recommendations for equipment, adaptive and/or assistive device for patients.

    Coordinates home programs and the need for treatment by a home care agency.

    Reports patient progress in divisional staff meeting, weekly patient rounds and specialty rounds.

    Participates in clinical aspects of the teaching program as required.

    Maintains standards for productivity, quality of care and compliance.

    Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.

    Completes annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.

    Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.

    Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.

    Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.

    Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

    Ability to establish treatment priorities and exercise independent and ethical judgment in the execution of therapeutic programs and plans of care.

    Ability to test and treat patients with a variety of modalities and exercise program.

    Ability to adapt standard occupational therapy techniques to the needs of special populations.

    Competence in both oral and written English.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.


    Bachelors Degree from an approved school of Occupational Therapy.

    District of Columbia Occupational Therapy license.

    Certification from the National Occupational Therapy Certification Board.

    *Preferred - Certified Hand Therapist

    Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (over 75lbs), balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, write, file, speak, hear, see (depth perception, color vision), calculate, compare, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.

    Howard University Hospital (HUH) is a mission driven and well established hospital in Washington DC seeking a full time Certified Hand Therapist (CHT)/Occupational Therapist. CHT is preferred or an OT with extensive hand experience and on track for CHT certification. HUH OT outpatient provides services to a wide variety of patients consisting of post-operative care for the entire upper extremity. Post-operative cases such as fracture care, tendon repair, joint replacement, and elbow and shoulder reconstruction. We also provide conservative management and general preventative care for the non-traumatic injury. Due to the ongoing growth we are looking for the right therapist who is dedicated to providing excellent upper extremity rehabilitation to restore optimal function to each and every patient.
