St. Cecilia Music Center (SCMC) is known by audiences and artist alike as one of the finest venues to hear and see world-renowned musicians. The building was built in 1894 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. SCMC is home to three vibrant concert series including The Jazz Series, Acoustic Café Folk Series and The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Series. SCMC is also committed to music education through the programming in our School of Music.


We are seeking a Part-time Community Engagement Director to take initiative in leading our outreach efforts to the broader community.

The Community Engagement Director is responsible for cultivating SCMC’s relationships within the community by developing and supervising programs that engage various sectors in SCMC programs. The Community Engagement Director will be responsible for guiding growth for existing programs and spearheading new initiatives that respond to our community’s needs, fulfilling SCMC’s mission and strategic plan of offering music to everyone in the region.


The Community Engagement Director will demonstrate initiative, a collaborative spirit, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple programs and projects of varying natures simultaneously. Success in this role requires someone who is imaginative, highly motivated and who can work in a self-directed manner.

  • A passion for St. Cecilia Music Center and their mission of promoting the appreciation, study and performance of music in order to enrich the lives of the residents of West Michigan
  • Bachelor's Degree required with 3-5 years of community-focused nonprofit experience
  • Exceptional ability to use unique, creative approaches to engage with diverse community groups
  • Serve as SCMC’s liaison to the greater Grand Rapids multicultural community, appeal to all ages, and to engage tourists from outside the Grand Rapids region
  • Flexible and adaptable style; an entrepreneur who can see things from a strategic big picture, while also effectively being tactical and hands-on
  • Possess the ability to evaluate problems accurately and exercise appropriate judgment and discretion when dealing with the community, donors, employees, and board members
  • Entrepreneurial, results-oriented focus, with demonstrated ability to work and solve problems both independently and in a team environment to move projects from inception to completion
