Job Summary 

The Executive Director of Human Resources is responsible for the design, development, and institution of strategic plans and measurable goals for the Human Resources Department in line with the mission, vision, and values of Henry Ford College. The Executive Director leads a team of HR professionals to provide the best possible services, programs, and initiatives related to people and labor relations, benefits, compensation, talent acquisition, training, and all other elements of the Human Resources function. The Executive Director is also expected to promote and maintain a high level of customer service within the department.


Applicants for this role must possess the following:

  • Master’s degree in business, human resources, or a closely related field with at least 10 years of proven experience in Human Resources (5 years of those being in leadership in a mid-to-large sized organization). SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification with experience in higher education, public schools, or government agencies strongly preferred. 
  • Expertise in directing the development, implementation, and evaluation of Human Resources programs, projects, services, systems, strategies, goals and objectives.
  • Experience in ensuring compliance with state, federal and local labor and employment laws including but not limited to Title VII, FMLA, etc.
  • The ability to foster a culture that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes diversity, equity and inclusivity, while maintaining a climate of collaboration, fairness, cooperation, and professionalism. Strong experience with EEO, Title IX, ADA, and diversity initiatives are required.
  • Experience in strengthening labor relationships in a collectively bargained organization including negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements, resolving personnel disputes, conducting investigations, etc.
  • The ability to build strong and strategic relationships with the collective bargaining units and College leaders (vice presidents, deans, managers) in a shared leadership environment to provide frequent, clear, constructive, cross-functional communication.
  • Experience with performance and continuous improvement processes combined with change and project management expertise to ensure people strategies are executed and outcomes are realized.
  • Ability to direct the comprehensive recruitment, successful retention, and promotional opportunities of a diverse College workforce.
  • Ability to direct and participate in classification and salary studies; compile and analyze related information and statistical data; prepare classification specifications and allocation standards; assure proper salary placement of new hires and existing College employees.
  • Ability to support faculty and staff by providing continued training and development opportunities.
