Description
Historic Hudson Valley is a Westchester County-based cultural nonprofit that welcomes visitors to five National Historic Landmarks, including Philipsburg Manor, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, and Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate. HHV offers K-12 school programs and educational materials, public tours, and seasonal festivals including the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. The organization has a national reputation for groundbreaking on-site educational programs and award-winning digital content in the content areas of Northern colonial enslavement, regional women’s history, and storytelling.

Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) seeks a detail-oriented, organized, creative, and experienced grant writer and institutional giving manager who will play an essential role in building and managing a pipeline of corporate, foundation, and government funders to support HHV’s critical education and historic preservation work.

The Grant Writer/Institutional Giving Manager will collaborate with the 4-person development team and HHV leadership to develop and execute an effective strategy for raising funds from institutions. In addition to managing a portfolio of both prospective and current funders, the position requires an experienced, talented writer capable of capturing and communicating the organization’s mission, programs, and character through well-crafted, persuasive documents for a range of audiences.

This writing-intensive position involves working with, and sometimes leading, inter-departmental teams developing grant applications for educational programs, digital projects, capital projects, and public events. Other responsibilities include prospect research, grants management, sponsorship recognition, and donor relations. Historic Hudson Valley has a track record of securing grants from agencies including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

The successful candidate will have 6-8 years of relevant work experience and the following skills and attributes:
  • Excellent writer with the ability to draft clear, compelling prose, in a variety of styles, on deadline
  • Proactive process manager who can identify and prioritize prospective funders, collaborate with colleagues to develop compelling proposals, cultivate key relationships at funding organizations, ensure that HHV is taking advantage of opportunities and meeting grant requirements, and submit well-written proposals and reports on time
  • Savvy relationship-builder who can effectively and thoroughly articulate the mission of HHV and the value of its programs
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, proactive
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic design/layout and presentation development skills
  • Experience with Microsoft 360 and CRMs

Responsibilities include:
  • Draft grant applications/proposals, solicitation and acknowledgement letters, sponsorship proposals/decks, progress reports, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, and digital content
  • Collaborate with colleagues across HHV to generate compelling and accurate text and documents when needed and support colleagues by proofreading and editing
  • Manage a funder pipeline by researching and identifying prospective institutional funders and matching them to HHV funding priorities.
  • Track current funder relationships and proactively work with colleagues to ensure the successful execution of and reporting on grants
  • Build key relationships with HHV program staff and remain current on HHV programs in order to be opportunistic in identifying potential funders/relationships
  • Stay abreast of philanthropic trends and opportunities, RFPs, and guidelines of relevant funding institutions
  • Support a broad range of development activities, including events, stewardship, communications, and others as needed

This is a full-time, hybrid on-site/remote position with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, employer funded 401K, generous paid time off and professional development opportunities. Evening and weekend hours at special events are required.
