DBEDC acts to build a strong, thriving and diverse community in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhoods. We develop, preserve and sustain affordable housing for rent and for ownership. We create commercial and economic development opportunities. We build community through community organizing and civic engagement activities. Since our founding in 1979, DBEDC has developed and preserved over 1100 units of rental and homeownership housing and 200,000 square feet of commercial space. We have created around 1,000 jobs and involved more than 1,500 young people in after school leadership development and organizing activities. We are one of Boston’s oldest and most established community development organizations with an annual operating budget of almost $5 million, a staff of just under 30, and $44 million in assets.

About the Role
DBEDC provide stable homes within great neighborhoods, which serve as a foundation for thriving families and individuals. Our homes and neighborhoods promote healthy families as well as work, economic, and educational success. The team contributes directly to these goals by supporting stable tenancies and resident health, and by connecting residents to each other and the broader community. Services are provided through direct service provision as well as through formal and informal relationships with third party providers.

Reporting to the Director of Resident and Community Engagement, the Resident Engagement Coordinator will deliver programs and amenities that support stable tenancies and serve children, adults and seniors living in DBEDC properties. The Coordinator will lead community engagement efforts in DBDEC properties to build social capital by fostering person-to-person and people-to-place relationships, develop the skill and will of resident leaders to take on leadership roles in the property and in their community, encourage civic engagement in order to build neighborhoods of choice were neighbors have elevated community standards and a sense of efficacy.

This is a mobile position that will require regular travel to member agency’s properties. The Coordinator will coordinate with property management staff and community partners, and is responsible for supporting partnerships with service providers to expand opportunities for residents to access programming that would enhance their quality of life. 

What you can expect to do in the role:
  • Prioritize services that assist residents to maintain stable tenancies, including screening tenants for public benefits eligibility, and support for tenants at risk of eviction.
  • Develop supportive professional relationships with residents that help them enhance the quality of their lives, empower them and encourage them in taking the steps to achieve self-sufficiency.
  • With the support of the Director of Resident and Community Engagement, identify individual and family with service needs and provide direct services or supportive linkages between residents and other services as appropriate; maintain appropriate case notes in accordance with WISP procedures.
  • Implement activities that promote a healthy community among residents, facilitate support groups, family programs, social celebrations and community engagement, and leadership development activities.
  • Plan and coordinate on-site and off-site social/recreational activities.
  • Organize and facilitate resident meetings; Problem solve with residents when appropriate. Provide professional communication and leadership in a variety of meeting/presentation settings that support open, honest communications and inclusion of diversity.
  • Provide general assistance, as needed, for DBDEC activities and events, and undertake other activities and duties as requested.
  • Acquire and maintain any certifications required by DBDEC or for delivery of services.

  • Minimum of three years’ case management or other relevant experience, working with low-income families, seniors, and non-elderly individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to understand and respect values, attitudes, and beliefs that differ across cultures and to respond appropriately to these differences with residents and in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services.
  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations based on the needs of the residents.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for meeting, motivating, and involving people in community activities.
  • Strong work ethic, a good sense of humor, and a commitment to social justice.
  • A high level of personal responsibility, motivation, nimbleness, ambiguity, and comfort navigating change and thrive in a fluid entrepreneurial environment.
  • Strong ability to provide and receive constructive feedback, and strong interpersonal communication ability.
  • Proficiency with document processing and collaboration software like Microsoft Office Suite or Google Docs Suite.
  • Can work constructively as part of a team but is also capable of working independently.
  • Can work occasional evening or weekend to support activities needed outside of regular business hours.
  • Can work in physical environments (this is not a virtual position).
It would be additionally phenomenal if you: 
  • Advanced education in human services or community engagement and outreach.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish-English, Cape Verdean Kriol-English, or Haitian Kreyol-English (written and spoken) strongly preferred.
  • Two years of experience in resident engagement and community organizing.
  • Experience working in a diverse multi-cultural community.
  • Experience producing e-newsletters and developing marketing campaigns.
  • Knowledge of affordable housing and community development issues.

  • Salary range: $55,000 - $65,000
