Key Responsibilities
Nonsterile Compounding (USP &lt;795&gt;):

Prepare nonsterile compounded medications&mdash;including creams, ointments, capsules, suspensions, and solutions&mdash;in accordance with established formulations, standard operating procedures, and USP &lt;795&gt; requirements.
Perform precise measurements, calculations, weighing, and mixing of ingredients while maintaining efficiency and strict attention to detail.
Complete all documentation thoroughly and accurately in compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
Maintain a clean, orderly, and compliant compounding environment with consistent adherence to safety, hygiene, and contamination-control protocols.
Quickly and effectively learn new compounding techniques, equipment, and workflow procedures as needed.

Inventory & Materials Management:

Maintain accurate oversight of ingredient and supply inventories to ensure uninterrupted operations within the compounding department.
Receive, inspect, and properly label raw materials in alignment with company and regulatory requirements.
Monitor and document lot numbers, beyond-use dates (BUDs), and storage conditions for all compounding materials.
Support routine inventory audits and cycle counts, ensuring all records remain precise, complete, and up to date.
Dispose of expired materials and manage waste in accordance with applicable guidelines.

Quality, Safety & Compliance:

Adhere to all pharmacy policies, SOPs, and applicable state and federal regulations governing compounding practices.
Assist with quality assurance activities, including reviewing logs, verifying preparations, and reporting deviations or concerns.
Uphold ongoing compliance with USP &lt;795&gt; standards and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a Pharmacy Technician program preferred.
Current pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) and state licensure in good standing.
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in nonsterile compounding and inventory management.
Thorough knowledge of USP 795 standards and best practices for nonsterile compounding.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all work performed.

Pharmacy Technician Overview: Receives and fills prescription requests for patients under the supervision of the Director of Compounding (DoC) and maintains patient profiles while adhering to department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and USP &lt;797&gt; and USP &lt;800&gt;.

Sterile Compounding: (As defined by Chapter 797 of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP 797).) Any manipulation of a sterile or non-sterile product intended to produce a final sterile product. Sterile compounding includes the following: 

Preparations prepared according to manufacturer&rsquo;s labeled instructions and other manipulations that expose the contents to potential contamination.
Preparations containing non-sterile components or devices that must be sterilized before administration.

Biologics, diagnostics, drugs, nutrients, and radiopharmaceuticals that possess either of the characteristics above
 

Duties and Responsibilities:  Specific duties will include, but not be limited to:
Weigh ingredients correctly and process them following the provided formula worksheet specifications
Ensure correct formula preparation according to the prescription following quality assurance guidelines
Make sure the pharmacist on duty has confirmed the formulation in accordance to the script before starting compounding preparation
Ensure compounds are prepared in accordance to formulation and that all relevant compounding guidelines and quality standards are maintained
Weigh and measure suitable chemicals to prepare different kinds of compounds including suspensions, creams, solutions, ointments, capsules, and suppositories
Package and label prepared compounds in suitable dispensing tool
Place and confirm that the beyond use date on the patient&rsquo;s product label is correct
Send prepared compound and documentation to supervising pharmacist for verification and sign off
Ensure that all sterile products are tested following 795 & 797 requirements
Execute quality assurance procedures on assigned randomly sampled scripts and document results following standards
Responsible for daily cleaning and logs in accordance to established policy
Perform daily confirmation that all equipment are working well, including capsule machines, counters, and cleaning balances
Perform filling and unloading of the dishwasher
Ensure all equipment, including freezer/fridge temperatures and weights on scales at work station are verified and maintained every morning
Ensure that all relevant steps in each compound are verified with the supervising pharmacist
Teach and mentor pharmacy technicians
Take part in relevant training
Take part in departmental meetings, as well as in relevant educational programs
May be asked to handle special projects as well as perform other duties that may be assigned.



Skills and Specifications:
Strong knowledge of and standards and all relevant USP compounding guidelines
Ability to work according to all USP compounding standards
Knowledge of State laws regulating pharmaceutical compounding practice
Strong knowledge of product preparation, compounding, packaging and labeling as well as quality assurance standards
High proficiency in computer usage
Effective oral and verbal communication, with co-staff, pharmacists, and the public
Strong ability to perform optimally in a team setting
Ability to excel performing multiple tasks at the same time without making errors
Yearly training in OSHA, HIPAA, and in pharmacy procedures and policies.
