Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.  BFL provides a broad range of residential (Freedom House) and community-based (The Secret Garden) services, which provide a variety of services to domestic violence (DV) survivors with disabilities.  Freedom House (FH) is BFL’s emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors with or without disabilities. Freedom House accepts women, children, and men.  Its programs include individual counseling for adults and children, support groups, safety planning, case management, housing assistance, occupational therapy, financial clinic services, onsite childcare, and advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems.

Barrier Free Living is seeking qualified applicants to join our team. This position reports to the Director of Childcare/recreation and performs the following duties: 

Follow curriculum and lesson plans.
Engage children in recreational and play activities indoors and outdoors
Facilitate individual and group recreational activities for children
Work effectively with Clinical Team
Participate in Team Meetings
Pick up children from school
Maintain updated group notes

High School Diploma

Preferable 2 years of experience working with children in an Educational setting (school, daycare, head start program, or nursery).
18 yrs. and older.
Ability to work with children of all ages
Experience working with children with disabilities and/or trauma history such as domestic violence preferred
Available to work one late shift (12 pm-8 pm) during the week. Occasional weekend day for planned family activities.  
Acceptable background clearance including fingerprinting.
Energetic and ability to multitask
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Skilled and knowledge of developing fun and interesting activities such as, music, art, drama, and storytelling as examples.
CPR/First Aid Certification a plus, if not will be offered the training upon hiring as it is a requirement.
Bilingual Spanish/English/ASL Knowledge preferred  and Computer knowledge 
​​Provide COVID-19 Vaccination FDA-authorized record 
​​​​Able to lift approximately 10 -15 pounds.

This position will spend time at the program site. The Childcare space is a shared area with Childcare Team.

Reports to Director of Childcare and Recreation

 A minimum of two days per week on-site at Freedom House or as directed. 

Start Date: ASAP
Hour Rate: $15:30        
Full Time/Non-Exempt 
Hours per week: 35:00 –
Schedule: Due to the pandemic, the schedule is a hybrid model. At present 3 days work from the office and 2 days working remotely. i.e. Monday/Wednesday/Friday (in person) 9 am -5 pm
Tuesday/Thursday- remotely 9 am -5 pm
This schedule is subject to change.
