Your Impact
The Vice President, Head of Construction (VPC) is responsible for executive and team leadership, management, and oversight of all construction activities across multiple sites. The VPC is responsible for driving company value by delivering top-notch project performance, bringing our projects in on time, on budget, with the requisite brand, quality, and safety specifications. The VPC is skilled at establishing relationships and working collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic team environment with multiple projects and priorities.
Primary Responsibilities
Project Execution/Management (60%)
  • Primary point of contact and responsible for all scope, budget, costs, design, and construction related items and issues from pre-development through the life of the project.
  • Responsible for handling multi-site projects requiring effective interaction and coordination with other project team members and internal company departments as well as external parties.
  • Develops and manages project scopes, timelines, safety protocols, and budgets and is responsible for each project's completion according to the company's standards for quality, time, and cost.
  • Creates, maintains, and is accountable for budget management and reporting through completion of all projects.
  • Optimizes project execution with the appropriate use of internal, external, and volunteer labor ensuring appropriate coverage of projects to enable execution of project schedules and budgets. 
  • Conducts regular scheduled and unscheduled field inspections on Habitat GSF projects, ensuring staff and subcontractor compliance with contract documents and when necessary, takes corrective action to ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Reviews and approves applications for payment as authorized in management approved contract and purchase orders and reviews all work in process to ensure compliance with plans and specifications, building codes and company standards.
  • Closely collaborates and integrates work plans, systems, and timelines with Real Estate Development/Project Management department during pre-development phases of projects and code compliance.
  • Suggests solutions for any arising issues or change orders.
  • Manages costs, document control, inspections, and change management. Ensures that materials are delivered on time, that tools are available, and that resources are properly allocated.
  • Will partner closely with VP of RED, CEO and CFO, establishing budgets for all projects and tracking expenditures through construction. Deliver projects at or under budget in partnership with Real Estate Development and entire Construction Team.
  • Prepares regular reports for CEO and Board of Directors and relevant Board Committees, updating progress on all projects.  

Organizational Leadership (30%)
  • Oversees and leads Construction team including direct reports, Sr. Director of Field Operations, Superintendents and Construction Project Managers
  • Establishes and maintains excellent relationships with all vendors, including but not limited to any subcontractors and supply chain/equipment suppliers, etc.
  • Oversight for all new construction and critical repair work through the Home Preservation Program.
  • Builds, coaches, and develops a strong construction team with exemplary execution and service mindset.
  • Establishes and enforces project management discipline, policies, processes, and tools that enable world-class execution.
  • Serves on Executive Team and actively participates in weekly meetings, organizational decision making and implementation of our strategic plan.
  • Serves as thought partner to CEO and VP Real Estate Development in future visioning, planning and execution to support Habitat’s goal of doubling impact and reducing environmental and climate impacts through most current applications and technologies within our budgetary confines.
Process Improvement (10%)
  • Deliver semi-monthly reports to CEO and every other month to Board of Directors regarding construction progress, variances, and budgeting.
  • Track all construction spending and approve check requests for all invoices.
  • Standardize construction practices and materials.
  • Utilize VE and Gift-in-Kind Program where appropriate. Stay updated of opportunities through Habitat International (HFHI) and other vendor supported opportunities to defray costs when possible.
  • Stay up to date and educated on latest industry technology, materials and policy tools available to support increasing impact of Habitat’s Mission.
  • Explore innovation and value engineering across construction implementation to ensure proven techniques and appropriate innovations or adaptations are explored and vetted as appropriate
  • Envision expansion opportunities and stay current with industry developments to advance the HGSF efforts and methodologies that incorporate our volunteer engagement model
  • Work with Fund Development team to identify materials and in-kind, low and pro-bono opportunities to reduce costs and engage supportive vendors, contractors and consultants for HGSF projects.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 8-12+ years' experience in senior construction leadership roles with increasing responsibilities and a track record of success.
  • Current California General Contractor’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required
  • Experience in podium building and other multi-family building typologies
  • Skilled at establishing relationships and working collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic team environment with multiple projects and priorities
  • Experience with effectively managing multiple sites and projects simultaneously from start to finish
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to read and understand construction drawings
  • Exceptional skills in project management, scheduling, estimating, negotiations, land planning, budget development, and strategic planning.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership, and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner and work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to work at Executive level and in collaboration with C suite and Board of Directors.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills, conflict management skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience with Microsoft office Suites and construction software required.
  • Able to work nights and weekends as necessary (6 days per week at job sites)
  • Must be able to travel and work within HGSF’s tri-county service area ( SF, Marin, San Mateo)
  • Must be able to pass background check
    (In accordance with state and county law: convictions do not necessarily rule out employment, it depends on the nature and severity of the conviction and is evaluated on a case by case basis, check is conducted on last 7 years only.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training and Certification in Construction Trade specializations
  • Knowledge of Procore, Sage and Microsoft Project
  • Passion for Habitat’s Mission
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. This position may begin as remote work and will transition to in-person/in-office work as permitted by the CDC and San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Physical Demands
This is split role between field oversight and office sedentary work; field work may include some lifting and loading up to 50 lbs., site meetings and inspection and construction site navigation, office work includes filing, administrative work, moving boxes, files or other tasks including the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and stand or bend as necessary. Must be able to travel across HGSF’s service area.

Compensation for this role is competitive, DOE. This full-time position offers medical, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, long-term disability, employee assistance program (EAP), Flex Savings Account (FSA), 403b retirement account, commuter benefits, 20 paid vacation days, 3 front loaded sick days (accrue up to 72 hours per year), and 13 paid holidays.
