Job Summary: Fiber Optic & Cable Splicer The Fiber Optic/ & Cable Splicer will be responsible for splicing, testing, repair, and installation of telecommunication cable. This will range from identifying cables and making the right connections, to cable fault analysis. This position will work out of the Columbus, OH office.
Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
Read and understand blueprints, specifications, splicing diagrams, and construction prints
Set up service for customers installing connecting, testing, and repairing cable
Splice different types and sizes of fiber optic cables using fusion splicing machines, hand tools, or mechanical equipment and operate an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and power meters
Inspect, test, and troubleshoot test lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results, to assess transmission characteristics and locate faults using an OTDR
Perform testing utilizing OTDRs, Power Meter/Light Sources, and VFLs. Record and document testing per customer specifications
Bond and ground fibers according to client specifications
Install and test fiber cable in a variety of environments (aerial and underground)
Climb poles, ladders and operate bucket truck as needed to complete daily construction assignments
Clean and maintain test equipment regularly
Work in confined spaces (trenches, tunnels, crawl spaces, etc. for extended periods
Additional splicing and construction related duties as assigned
Additional responsibilities as directed by the department manager
Required Skills & Qualifications: General
Ability to work independently and ensure that all splicing operations are completed by customer and industry specifications
Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. regularly and 100 lbs. as needed with or without assistance
Must have steel toed boots
Ability to work exposed to inclement weather (cold, snow, rain, heat, etc.)
Ability to work outages and long hours as required
Ability to travel to project/job locations, sometimes out of town, overnight, and for days at a time
Must have basic computer skills, email, Excel, and Word
Must be able to communicate effectively and maintain a professional working attitude with co-workers, manager, customers, etc.
Must adhere to safety practices and procedures at all times
Be prepared to work long hours and be part of a call-out (on-call) rotation as needed for customer outages
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must have a good driving record
Must pass a pre-employment drug test, background screening including an acceptable motor vehicle report
Must have reliable transportation to and from work
Technical
Previous experience working from blueprints and specifications
Thorough working knowledge of the most widely used construction practices of fiber and copper cable
1+ years of previous experience splicing fiber optic and/or copper cable
Working knowledge of the telecommunications network structure both aerial and underground construction
Ability to understand the color code to install and test fiber and copper cable in a variety of environments (aerial and underground)
Ability to run trouble in both copper and fiber cable
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
Maintain a current DOT medical card and the medical examination report
Class A CDL
Maintain OSHA 10 Certification; will provide the training and testing for this for the selected candidate
Maintain OSHA 30 Certification; will provide the training and testing for this for the selected candidate
Maintain any other job-related certifications
