Position Description
The Environmental Lead will be focused on monitoring, implementing and improving environmental impacts on National Grid Renewables construction and operations projects.  The Environmental Lead will oversee the National Grid Renewable’s environmental program including stormwater, spill prevention and control, Tier II reporting, waste management, vegetation management and environmental training (3rd party and internal).   This position will also monitor, audit and continuously improve each aspect of the program.  This position is responsible for supporting the evolution the programs as necessary to comply with changing standards or meet the changing needs of the department.  This position will partner with the executive management, plant personnel, construction, and other departments to ensure optimal processes and training are developed and delivered. The Environmental Lead will report to the Vice President of SHE Risk & Compliance.

Duties
  • Provide environmental support to the construction and operations on-site teams.
  • Monitor and audit construction contractors’ compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency, local regulations, permits, the contract and site requirements.
  • Manage organizational compliance with local, state and federal environment, regulations. Ensures that environmental policy and procedure manuals are available and updated at all times.
  • Support possible implementation of ISO 14001.
  • Manage the SWPPP process from Notice of Intent to Notice of termination.
  • Manage Contractors performing environmental studies and programs such as SPCC and SWPPP.
  • Review and comment on SWPPP drawings prior to construction.
  • Support vegetation management including permitting plan review, selecting contractors to perform vegetation management, selecting/reviewing seed mixes, and assuring establishment and stabilization of the vegetation.
  • Partner with management, plant personnel, and other stakeholders to develop environmental improvements, processes, procedures, and training across the operations and construction department.
  • Plan and implement audit (3rd party and internal) of environmental programs and work activities. 
  • Facilitate and solve environmental challenges that arise on operational plants and construction sites on a day to day basis. This includes working cross-functionally to implement engineering and administrative controls.
  • Perform periodic SWPPP inspections on renewable assets to ensure they are maintained to local, state, and Federal regulations.
  • Work with local regulators regarding compliance with environmental regulations and timely closeout of violations when applicable.

Experience
  • Degree in environmental engineering, environmental studies or directly applicable experience within the renewable energy industry.
  • 5 years of experience with electrical power generation in renewable, nuclear or fossil fuel plants, preferably with at least 1 year focused on renewable energy.
  • Experience with federal station and local environmental regulations.
  • Working knowledge of EPA and other environmental standards.
  • Strong project management experience and skills.
  • Ability to solve problems dealing with multiple variables and limited standardization.
  • Work well under pressure from job demands, multi-tasking ability essential.
  • Ability to travel up to 75%, with some on short notice.
Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
  • Experience in wind and solar plant operations and maintenance and construction
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish effective working relationships and articulate issues and subject matter to process owners while being a team player.
  • Strong ability to review and analyze financial and technical data.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Compensation
