General Overview:
The Knowledge House’s mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders who will uplift their communities out of poverty.

The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education­-to-­employment pipeline in underserved Bronx neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16­-24 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. 

Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 1,850 students. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship in software engineering for adult job trainees and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students to learn web design.

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Teaching and Learning Manager, Youth & Community Development Programs, the Instructor will be primarily responsible for partnering with an instructor to teach a virtual six week technology training program for high school students preparing for youth apprenticeships in software development. 

Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 1:00 - 5:00 pm EST. Classes generally include a mix of demonstrations, discussions, labs, group exercises, short breaks, and independent work time. 

Key components of the program include:
  • Object-oriented learning, project-based training, foundations of Github, Python, and Java
  • React/angular frameworks and best practices for navigating the collaborative aspects of building code
  • Real-world software development experience through a work-study project

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Instruction and Course Delivery - 60%
  • Teach remote technical curricula Monday-Thursday during the hours of 1:00pm - 5:00pm ET July 8, 2024 - August 15, 2024 
  • Lead all classroom management tasks, instruction, and implementation of both guided and unguided labs via Zoom.
  • Review student feedback and provide insight on areas that need to be either reimagined or where students need additional support.

Student Support & Evaluation  - 10%
  • Review and provide feedback on student assignments, labs, and assessments, providing grades when necessary. 
  • Meeting weekly grading/review and lesson plan and materials preparation deadlines.
  • Support in providing insight into data related to attendance, incident reports, and student competency.
  • Meet weekly with team to align on plans for the coming week and address any issues arising in the classroom. 

Curriculum Tasks - 30%
  • Create, modify, and maintain unit plans, lesson plans, and presentation slides, to be prepared at least a week prior to class.
  • Create, modify, and maintain instructional materials including lectures, readings, assignments, exams, labs, projects, etc. for use during classes, creating custom materials as needed for instructional needs.

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field and/or Bootcamp completion is preferred
  • At least 2 years experience working in classroom or informal learning environments (virtual or in-person) required 
  • Previous experience developing engaging instructional materials for remote and in-person facilitation
  • Previous experience working with youth or young adults preferred 
  • Proficient in Python3 Programming, Git, and Basic Bash Commands 
  • Experience with Jupyter Notebooks
  • Experience with SQL, Flask/Django, Numpy, Scipy, and Pandas is a major plus 
  • Familiarity working with JSON data
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, beginner JavaScript, UX/UI, wireframing, web design, graphic design, computational thinking 
  • Familiarity with statistical and other mathematical concepts (regression analysis, linear algebra concepts) 
  • Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (e.g. Google Classroom, Canvas)

$33/hour for ~28 hours per week
