2025 Summer Internship — Wind Driven Rain Internship
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is seeking interns to join our team this summer. As a Wind Driven Rain intern, you’ll get experience in supporting IBHS’s research including, but not limited to:
Support for Wind Driven Rain (WDR) project (a major part of strategy 26):
◦ Support for technical design, and instrumentation of wind driven rain (WDR) apparatus and demonstration area.
◦ Design of spray rack and nozzle system for WDR apparatus.
◦ Desktop studies on weather bureau wind and rain data to determine WDR hazard maps for the current IBHS collaboration with Cornell University.
◦ Analysis of data from IBHS Precipitation Imaging Probe (PIP) Tower to inform desktop studies
• Preparation of a general-purpose wind tunnel analysis MATLAB functions for use by the research team.
Skills Requirements:
This internship position is for research driven Undergraduate or master’s students in Civil/Mechanical Engineering or Meteorology to Support IBHS’s current work in developing its Wind Driven Rainwater ingress testing capabilities for the testing of building envelopes.
This project will also involve the analysis of existing wind and rain records and precipitation imaging probe data to determine representative wind and rain records for testing. In parallel, the candidate will also work on a library of general-purpose wind tunnel analysis programs that will be used for future work at the IBHS full scale test chamber. A sound background in programming languages e.g. MATALB or Python is required for data analysis and skills and enthusiasm for hands-on laboratory work is also desired
