Job Summary

The Traffic Control Technician is responsible for safely directing and controlling traffic around construction sites, roadwork zones, and special projects. This role ensures the safety of workers, pedestrians, and motorists by setting up, maintaining, and removing traffic control devices in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices including cones, barrels, barricades, signs, and arrow boards
  • Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic using hand signals, signs, and flagging equipment
  • Ensure compliance with MUTCD, OSHA, and company safety standards
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and the public
  • Monitor traffic flow and adjust control methods as needed for safety and efficiency
  • Conduct routine inspections of traffic control equipment to ensure proper placement and condition
  • Respond quickly to changing site conditions, emergencies, or traffic incidents
  • Maintain a clean and safe work zone at all times
  • Complete required documentation, reports, and time sheets accurately

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Traffic Control / Flagger Certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Knowledge of traffic control plans and safety procedures
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience in traffic control, construction, or roadwork
  • Familiarity with MUTCD standards
  • Experience working on DOT or municipal projects

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged standing and walking
  • Lifting, carrying, and placing traffic control devices
  • Exposure to noise, moving traffic, and outdoor environments

Work Schedule

  • May include early mornings, nights, weekends, and overtime depending on project needs
