POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Be on site during construction activities to flag sensitive species and breeding birds for avoidance.
- Maintain compliance with the MBTA by restricting vegetation removal during the peak bird-breeding season (April through September). If construction activities occur during this period, biological monitors will conduct nest checks to ensure that no nesting birds are present. Any nesting birds and associated active nest located will be documented with GPS and flagged by creating a 20 ft buffer around the nest location. This can include ground, cavity, and tree nesters. The nest location itself should not be flagged.
- Will flag off any areas where any sensitive plant species are found during the construction phase to ensure the area is worked around as best as possible. Location will be documented with GPS. If needed, attempts will be made to transplant individual plants outside the area of disturbance. *
- Flag milkweed plants (Asclepias spp.) for avoidance. Milkweed plants would be checked for Monarch eggs and caterpillars during the breeding season before removal or disturbance. Dense milkweed stands will be avoided by a 50-foot buffer. Notice of these activities must be provided to agency and LANL biologists.
- Contact LANL and agency biologists for further review if helicopter is needed due to possible peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) nests in the general area.
- Ensure that installation of aerial transmission line over the Rio Grande will be completed outside the timeframe of November–December and February–March. These timeframes are the highest migration periods of Sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) and other migratory waterfowl through the project area.
- Report any findings of sensitive species and/or nesting bird locations to LANL and agency biologists, including species and GPS location.
