Standby School Nurse (RN) 

Location: Montgomery County, Maryland  

Pay: $45 - $60 per hour  

Position Summary

V-Tech Solutions is seeking a Standby School Nurse (RN) to provide flexible nursing coverage throughout Montgomery County Public Schools. The Standby School Nurse serves as a floating Registered Nurse, supporting multiple schools, classrooms, specialized programs, and school-sponsored activities as needed. 

Unlike a one-to-one nursing assignment, this role provides comprehensive nursing care to students across assigned locations, ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment through clinical assessment, medication administration, health monitoring, emergency response, and collaboration with school staff and families.  

Responsibilities 

  • Provide nursing assessments, treatment, and ongoing monitoring for students with acute and chronic health conditions. 

  • Administer medications and perform nursing procedures in accordance with physician orders, Maryland nursing regulations, and school policies. 

  • Support students with asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies, and other medically complex conditions. 

  • Provide nursing coverage during field trips, school events, testing, extracurricular activities, and other school-sponsored programs. 

  • Serve as temporary nursing coverage when school nurses or private duty nurses are unavailable. 

  • Respond to medical emergencies and activate Emergency Medical Services (EMS) when necessary. 

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student health records and documentation. 

  • Collaborate with school nurses, administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, healthcare providers, and multidisciplinary teams. 

  • Assist with infection prevention, communicable disease control, and school health education initiatives. 

  • Support students receiving special education services and those with individualized healthcare plans. 

  • Travel between assigned schools and educational programs as required.  

Required Qualifications 

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license. 

  • Current CPR/BLS certification. 

  • Experience in pediatric, school, or community health nursing preferred. 

  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills. 

  • Experience administering medications and responding to medical emergencies 

  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing assignments. 

  • Excellent organizational, documentation, and time management skills. 

  • Knowledge of Maryland school health regulations is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) 

  • National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) certification. 

  • Previous school nursing experience. 

  • Experience supporting students with disabilities and medically fragile populations. 

  • Familiarity with IEPs, Section 504 Plans, Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs).  

Compensation
