SUMMARY:
The Chief of Finance & Operations at Mass Insight Education and Research will play a critical role in shaping the organization’s financial and operational strategy, driving both financial health and operational efficiency to achieve long-term objectives in alignment with Mi’s mission. The Chief of Finance & Operations will lead the development of a financial sustainability strategy while evaluating and enhancing Mi’s business and revenue model. They will also lead operational strategy, setting policies, managing risks, and driving initiatives to foster growth, efficiency, and performance. In this dual role, the Chief of Finance & Operations will oversee all data security, IT operations, and financial functions—including budgeting, accounting, tax, and treasury—while ensuring compliance with regulations and aligning financial strategies with organizational goals. Working closely with senior leadership, the Chief of Finance & Operations will ensure seamless alignment between financial and operational strategies to support the organization’s continued success and expansion.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Strategy, Vision, & Leadership:
• Serves as a key financial visionary stewarding organizational business strategy that is multi-faceted and dynamic
• Provides financial analysis and recommendations for business development, pricing strategy, fundraising, and revenue generation ensuring effective management of profitability, risk, and overhead
• Oversee long-term budget planning, cost management, and forecasting, ensuring alignment with strategic goals while monitoring key performance indicators, and optimizing financial modeling, reporting, and analysis to provide leadership with timely, data-driven insights for strategic decision-making.
• Develops tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations
• Builds capacity of leaders and managers to oversee department budgets with a focus on resource management and meeting revenue goals
• Serves as a critical thought partner to the Programs and Business Development teams in support of revenue proposals
• Serves as organizational co-signatory ensuring legal, compliance, and financial adherence in contracts
• Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly on banking relationship and contract negotiations
Operational Leadership & Strategy:
• In partnership with the Executive Team, develops strategy, systems, and processes for ensuring organizational operations reach a consistently high bar of quality and efficiency
• In partnership with the Executive Team, streamlines and optimize operational processes across departments, ensuring efficient resource allocation and programs are delivered on time and within budget
• Lead the design and implementation of operational and tech initiatives to enhance impact, productivity, and engagement to achieve stronger coordination and cohesion with remote teams. in partnership with the Office of People & Culture
• Oversee operational risk management, ensuring the organization operates in compliance with relevant regulations, especially those related to non-profit governance
• Utilize data and analytics to track organizational performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and inform decision-making across finance and operations
• Serve as Data Security Officer ensuring compliance with the Information Security Policy
• Develop and implement a multi-year IT strategy and infrastructure that helps Mi achieve its organizational priorities, ensuring secure, reliable and integrated technology and data solutions that support Mi’s remote work environment in alignment with organizational mission and goals
Internal Management and Infrastructure:
• Manage the Accounting & Finance Director in the execution day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting functions (billing & collections, payables & disbursements, payroll); resolution of accounting and payroll issues
• Vendor management for our outsourced IT support functions, including Help Desk, network and firewall maintenance, software administration, and information technology strategy and controls.
• Effectively manages finance and accounting team, including development and performance management and career development of team members
• Ensure accurate and timely preparation of audit, schedules, annual financial statements, and required legal filings, including 990 preparation and state filings
• Ensure accurate documentation of and compliance with all corporate and required accounting policies and procedures; coordination of the annual audit and tax engagements with the auditors and tax preparers including compliance with US GAAP and other federal, state, and local requirements.
• Oversee monthly close tasks including, but not limited to, account reconciliations, and other miscellaneous analysis; ensure timeliness, accuracy, and completeness as it pertains to the close process.
• Support the development and program teams on budgets for new/ renewing grant proposals, contracts, and financials for donor reports.
• Establish and maintain the reporting systems and controls to ensure financial accuracy and compliance with reporting requirements, regulatory compliance, and effective risk management
• Communicate with multiple stakeholders in consistent, data-based, and transparent ways.
• Foster a positive, collaborative, and service-oriented culture within the finance team; serve as a role model for the team and key collaborators
Board and Senior Staff Leadership:
• Work closely with Executive Team and Board on the creation, implementation and monitoring of the Strategic Plan
• Participate in planning and attending leadership team meetings and all-staff gatherings, while actively fostering a positive organizational culture and supporting continuous learning across the organization.
• Serve as the management liaison to the Board's Finance & Audit Committee; prepare timely and accurate board and committee materials and effectively communicate and present critical financial matters and risk assessment
• Attend Board meetings and appropriate Board committee meetings and report on activities as needed, in coordination with the CEO
• Work with the CEO and other members of the Executive Team to ensure Board members are engaged and energized by their association with the organization.
• Serves as Data Security Officer
• Engage the board finance & audit committee around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model(s) and operational delivery.
• Assist in establishing yearly objectives and meeting agendas, and selecting and engaging outside consultants and our bank (auditors, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience developing and/or improving operational & financial systems, processes in fast-paced, complex and dynamic environments
• Skilled at leading change with a proven ability to develop and realize a vision, generate buy-in and inspire others to achieve shared goals.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication, listening skills, and demonstrated ability to articulate reasoning to diverse audiences persuasively and credibly
• Non-profit experience required, industry experience preferred
• Track record of building and leading effective teams; evidence of building a customer-centric, data-driven team culture and coaching/developing others to maximize their potential
• Ability to consult, advise, and work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders and communities across diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Strong strategic and analytical capabilities and project and budget management skills that leverage expertise in translating qualitative and quantitative data into action
• 10+ years relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experiences.
• CPA and/or CGMA preferred.
