Position Summary
As the Statutory Accounting Supervisor in Moda’s Accounting department, you will oversee two direct reports (GL Accountants) and work collaboratively with the GL team of approximately 20 to ensure the complete and accurate accounting and reporting of the Company’s financial data for one of the Company’s largest and most complex statutory reporting entities. Additionally, you will regularly interact with a broader group both in and out of the Accounting department, as well as interface with various financial stakeholders external to the Company.This is a FT Hybrid role based in Portland, Oregon.
Pay Range
$84,790.27 - $108,102.95 annually (depending on experience)
*Actual pay is based on qualifications. Applicants who do not exceed the minimum qualifications will only be eligible for the low end of the pay range.

Required Skills, Experience & Education:- Bachelor degree in Accounting or Finance; Accounting preferred.
- 5+ years public accounting or GL accounting experience; CPA preferred but not required.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of accounting concepts and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Understanding of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, including understanding of T-Accounts, and ability to work through difficult accounting scenarios.
- Experience with various forms of financial reporting, including preparation or review of financials, footnotes and electronic tie outs.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team to work collaboratively as a group as well as drive and maintain individual ownership amongst staff.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure to meet strict deadlines, as well as ability to maintain flexibility to shift priorities and reprioritize (both for individual workload as well as supervised team).
- Strong time-management and organization skills; ability to move multiple work streams forward at once and actively prioritize projects.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Use of pivot tables, vlookups, and other moderately difficult Excel functions required.
- Willingness to work additional hours when necessary.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and project a professional business image with both internal and external parties.
Primary Functions:
- Ensure the integrity of the GAAP general ledger by overseeing the monthly financial close for one of the Company’s statutory reporting entities (Moda Health Plan, Inc.). This will include detailed journal entry and reconciliation review as well as analysis of financial results. This will also include acting in the preparer capacity for more difficult and complex accounts.
- Ensure that 100% of account reconciliations are completed monthly by direct reports and perform detailed review of those reconciliations. Must have ability to assist or personally complete more difficult reconciliations if needed. Further, must have the ability to create appropriate reconciliations for new accounts or processes as needed (i.e. assess appropriateness of ending account balance and develop reconciliation approach from scratch).
- On a quarterly basis, work with relevant GL Accountants on the preparation of Statutory basis financial statements to be filed with the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. This includes involvement in preparing elements of the statutory statements as well as an element of reviewing work prepared by GL accountants. These time periods involve extra workload and flexibility to meet deadlines is required.
- Work collaboratively with both supervisory team and direct reports in order to maintain adherence to close calendar, both for monthly close as well as quarterly and annual close. Maintain a positive team dynamic and engage regularly with the GL accounting team.
- Work with other departments as necessary to ensure financial statements are complete and accurate; work to understand and/or test the completeness and accuracy of key sources of data (key reports, key spreadsheets, etc.).
- Train and develop GL Accountants to become more knowledgeable about relevant topics/concepts and to generally develop their accounting and reporting skills. Determine ways to provide cross training opportunities for GL Accountants to further grow and diversify each GL Accountant’s skill sets. Responsible for completion of annual review for two direct reports.
- Perform technical research as required and apply researched topics in a consistent manner. Ability to write technical accounting memos complete with ASC or SSAP research, T-Accounts, JEs, etc.
- Oversee preparation and/or independently prepare various schedules, including standalone entity financial statements, in support of the annual external audit.
- Assist in areas of external audits specific to the Company’s statutory reporting entities.
- Prepare miscellaneous compliance filings and reporting to external parties as needed.
- Work to build understanding of business operations for Moda Health Plan in order to anticipate financial statement trends. Ability to elevate anticipated financial issues or ideas to management as appropriate.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to exhibit ownership over key responsibilities, improve operations, and streamline work processes to create efficiencies.
- Collaborate regularly with supervisory team over the general body of work to be performed, both by GL Accountants as well as by supervisory staff.
- Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Hybrid environment with extensive close PC and keyboard use, constant sitting, and frequent phone communication. Must be able to navigate multiple computer screens. A reliable, high-speed, hard-wired internet connection required to support hybrid work. Must be comfortable being on camera for virtual training and meetings. Work in excess of standard workweek, including evenings and occasional weekends, to meet business needs.

This position works closely with others in the Accounting department (approximately 40 people), as well as with others throughout the Company including the areas of: Underwriting & Actuarial, IT, Claims and Benefit & Provider Configuration. Externally, this position will work with external auditors, state regulators and various other plan partners. Attendance and participation at meetings will be required.
