The Tri-Cities Historical Museum (TCHM), a robust non-profit history museum located in downtown Grand Haven, operates three museum buildings and related historical and interpretive sites, and serves the adjoining scenic communities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg. Founded in 1959 and supported in part by operating millage authorized by the citizens of its surrounding communities, TCHM offers exemplary exhibitions, archives, research, education, preservation, and programs for residents, visitors, and K12 audiences in support of collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of northwest Ottawa County, Michigan.


TCHM is searching for a dynamic, strategic, and operational leader to ensure that the museum continues to deliver on its mission, offering diverse public programs and education services.

As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for the planning and managing of the entire TCHM operations. You will assist the Board and drive staff in the creation and implementation of the museum’s strategic plan. You will lead staff and volunteers in maintaining their commitment to excellence.

You will also serve as the chief public advocate, primary spokesperson, and brand ambassador for TCHM, articulating the museum’s value and contribution to the region and state. You will build meaningful relationships with diverse stakeholders, bring the community and its visitors together, and garner both public and private financial support.

The Experience and Skills You Will Bring
  • A bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, or related field and proven leadership experience in a mission-driven, nonprofit, academic, government institution, or comparable organization. Master’s degree desired. ​​​​​​
  • Significant experience in and enthusiasm for strategic planning, fund development, budgeting and forecasting, financial management and reporting, and grant writing and management.
  • Recognized success in big picture thinking, taking advantage of opportunities and translating broad goals into achievements.
  • Track record in building and developing teams, coaching and mentoring staff members, reporting to and working closely with a board of directors, and creating community partnerships to achieve mission success.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire growth, creative thinking, and adaptability, drive a culture of commitment and excellence and gain credibility and trust quickly.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills and hands-on public speaking experience that inspire the confidence of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution skills and ability to exercise confidentiality and neutrality in sensitive situations.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, outstanding networking, and relationship-building skills, and a genuine passion for embracing diverse cultures and constituents.
  • Knowledge of national standards and best practices in museum management, historic preservation, public history, and archaeology would be ideal.
  • Familiarity with Michigan, the Lake Michigan shore, and its resources, government, business, and institutions to know what makes it distinctive, detect its most pressing questions and identify opportunities would be beneficial.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $85,000 annually with the potential for higher. Aside from an attractive compensation, TCHM offers a competitive benefits package including pension contribution, family-friendly health insurance, sick leave, vacation time, holiday leave, and opportunities for travel support and professional development.
