Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.  BFL provides a broad range of residential (Freedom House) and community-based (The Secret Garden) services, which provide a variety of services to domestic violence (DV) survivors with disabilities.  Freedom House (FH) is BFL’s emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors with or without disabilities. Freedom House accepts women, children, and men.  Its programs include individual counseling for adults and children, support groups, safety planning, case management, housing assistance, occupational therapy, financial clinic services, onsite childcare, and advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems.

Barrier Free Living is seeking qualified applicants to join our team. This position reports to the Director of Childcare/recreation and performs the following duties: 

Requirements:
● Work in-person: 5 days a week, 9:5 pm. Occasional weekend or late day for planned
activities.
● Preferable 2 years of experience working with children in an Educational setting (school, day
care, head start program or nursery).
● Ability to work with children of all ages.
● Experience working with children with disabilities and/or trauma history such as domestic
violence, developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, etc.
● Bilingual Spanish/English/ASL Knowledge is a plus.
● minimum requirement: high School Diploma.
● 18 yrs. and older.
● Engage children in recreational and play activities indoors and outdoors.
● Facilitate individual and group recreational activities for children throughout the week..
● Cleaning interactive areas throughout the day.
● Keeping record of each child’s progress and any problem that may occur while the child is at
the family center.
● Computer literate.

● communication with parents in regards to their children participating at the family center i.e.
targeting the child separation anxiety, contacting them in case of an emergency, and sharing
any concerns in regards to their children, etc.
● Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and participate in department meetings.
● Occasionally pick up children from school.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● CPR/First Aid Certification a plus if not will be offered the training upon hiring as it is a

Hour Rate: $16.50        
Status: 
Full Time/Non-Exempt 
Hours per week: 35:00 –
Schedule: 5 Days per week in the office 9am-5pm.
