Summary

Plans, coordinates, and institutes functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering project within area of assigned responsibility by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. This is a transitional position for someone with the required field experience and/or education to gain project engineering experience in a supervised manner prior to advancing into the Project Engineer role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.​

  • Solves complex problems and calculations, using engineering formulas and skills
  • Evaluates research by others and writes reports
  • Assists the Project Engineer in the preparation of proposal estimates of time and expenses required to complete the project
  • Assists the Project Engineer in scheduling staffing requirements for field projects
  • Assists the Project Engineer in supervising and instructing, as needed, the responsibilities of field personnel on projects assigned to them
  • Develops and maintains a schedule and budget for the assigned engineering project
  • Provides reports on the status of project milestones and adjusts schedules accordingly
  • Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget
  • Identifies project staffing requirements and coordinates staffing with supporting organization managers
  • Coordinates preparation and delivery of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems
  • Participates in the integration of technical activities
  • Evaluates and presents changes for design, specifications, drawing releases, reports, etc to the Project Engineer and /or Project manager for approval
  • Prepares interim and completion project reports
  • Interfaces with customers to provide project status reports and ensure customer needs are met
  • Provides status and progress reports to customer, project team, and management
  • Performs site inspection to monitor progress/conformance to specs and procedures
  • Designs portions of a project
  • Makes calculations, using engineering formulas and skills
  • Instructs drafters how to reduce designs into completed drawings
  • Supervises and delegates assignments to staff
  • Oversees staff’s daily activities to ensure it is correct and complete
  • Reviews status reports prepared by project personnel and modifies schedules or plans as required
  • Prepares project reports for management, client, or others
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems
  • Coordinates project activities with activities of government regulatory or other governmental agencies
  • Identifies the potential for new projects and seeks opportunities to promote the company’s services on an ongoing basis
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements related to water and wastewater components for commercial, industrial, mixed-use, large scale residential, hospitality, and other land development projects
  • Manages employees, provides oversight and direction
  • Coaches, mentors, provides training and staff career development
  • Reinforces business relationships with existing clients and develops new relationships with future clients
  • Identifies the potential for new projects and seeks opportunities to promote the company’s services on an ongoing basis
  • Design projects plans and site specifications to include site layout, grading, drainage, infrastructure, erosion and sediment control, etc.
  • Be able to incorporate both geotechnical and environmental engineering elements, as required, into the overall site development plan
  • Travels 25%+ of the time which may be out of state

Ability to review and understand plans, specs, and reports including site, grading, utility, foundation, details, structural, drawings, architectural, grading, federal, state and local regulations.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a minimum of 3+ years of field or related experience where a PE license counts towards that related experience, a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and demonstrates ability to meet the requirements of the job as set forth in this description. Previous construction experience is preferred.

Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred or have the ability to become licensed within 2 years of being in this position.

Proficient in communicating both verbal and written in the English language. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Proficient or familiarity with AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, NitroPro, MS Word, Excel, Adobe

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Work Environment

Approximately 25+ of the work is conducted outdoors. Worker must be able to walk frequently on uneven hard and soft ground/terrain in all types of weather conditions to include cold, hot rain, snow, ice, etc. Employees working in the field may also be exposed to sun, wind, insects, plants, animals, etc. As a result, appropriate clothing for outdoor work, work boots, safety glasses, hard hat, safety vest is required while working in the field.
