Role
M2GEN is searching for a Data Architect to work in a collaborative role with leadership and stakeholders to build an innovative research platform at the cutting edge of genomics research. The Data Architect will play a critical role in defining a platform that is precise, performant, and scales well with a focus on the lowest layers of the data stack and extending through the back-end platform API. The ability to develop proofs-of-concept (POCs) is essential to this role, so coding, design, and testing skills are necessary as well as conceptual understanding of factors impacting performance, security, and scale. Architects are expected to be key players in growing M2GEN by leveraging a variety of skills to build and securely operate the new platform in alignment with other teams within the company.

Responsibilities (this is not an all inclusive list, duties may evolve over time as business needs change)
- Evidence based research on technologies with GTM focus
- Efficiently develop and evaluate POCs for relevant technology alternatives
- Define secure and performant design patterns to be used where relevant throughout the business
- Define generic interfaces between system components
- Excellent presentation skills and the ability to translate the value of technology to business owners
- Evaluate build vs buy for key technologies
- Work with stakeholders to make informed technical recommendations based on business needs
- Document, educate, and evangelize developers and users on design decisions
- Ensure that data are secured and governed according to business and government requirements
Education / Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related engineering field
- 10+ Years in product engineering developing commercial software and applications in either B2B or B2C markets
- 5+ Years as a Principal developer or Architect with responsibility for design and implementation
- Strong understanding of modern end-to-end data platform architectures, the associated technologies and the implications of choices of both
- Demonstrated cloud-native architecture development in Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Willingness to work hands-on with developers at any level when needed
- Experience with agile development methodologies including SCRUM and Kanban
- Expertise in TDD, CI/CD deployment techniques, git based pipelines, and modern software construction
- Experience with data security required
- Experience with compliance and governance desirable
- Experience with AI/ML and/or NLP also desirable
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Expert with relational and non-relational data store design and implementation at scale
- Self motivated and directed, consistently demonstrating initiative and drive for results
- Excellent organizational skills
- Experience working and mentoring developers at a variety of levels
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to communicate with business and technical users at all levels, internally and externally
- Comfortable working independently as well as part of a matrixed team
- Persistent and resilient with a tenacious appetite for success
- Ability to navigate and communicate across the organization with different functional groups and varying personalities
- Passion for science, data and learning a plus
- Expert knowledge of SQL required
- Experience with Python, Apache Spark, and Data Lake technologies preferred
- Cloud development experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) required, Azure preferred
