KERA is looking for an Audience Producer to help develop diverse news content crafted specifically and intentionally for our digital platforms.

The station serves the country’s fifth-largest media market, reaching more than 2 million people weekly through KERA TV, KERA News, KXT and Art&Seek. For more than 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a destination for community engagement and lifelong learning.

Position Summary
Are you passionate about working to equitably represent communities in news coverage and engaging with real people to help shape stories?  Then this is the job for you. The Audience Producer will create content to grow, diversify and engage local and regional audiences on KERA’s digital platforms. This includes our websites, on-demand audio, email and social media platforms.
Reporting to the Audience Editor, the producer will be a member of the newsroom audience development team helping to curate and produce news content for digital platforms and determine the best ways to connect with our audiences.

This person will help newsroom colleagues package their reporting for specific audiences, as well as report and produce original content to help bring digital innovation to stories covering important issues affecting communities in North Texas and across the state.

They will play a key role in newsroom engagement initiatives on various platforms, including user-generated content, social listening and events. This producer will help bring new voices and perspectives into our coverage, and will be an integral part of KERA’s efforts to grow as an equitable, inclusive news organization.

This position is full time and will be assigned will work a shift 1-2 hours outside the typical workday. They will be expected to work some weekends.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Serve as part of the newsroom audience development team helping to fill daily production requirements, like building and copyediting web stories and crafting content for the newsroom’s social media, on-demand audio and email products
  • Report and produce feature stories focused on digital distribution and engagement
  • Co-report stories with colleagues, focusing on digital storytelling and engagement
  • Help develop and execute newsroom engagement initiatives on digital and legacy platforms, and at events
  • Focus storytelling and engagement initiatives on building audiences and sources in marginalized communities
  • Respond to breaking news events and get information out to audiences quickly on multiple platforms
  • Help lead some of KERA News’ digital special projects
  • Use data to make decisions about when and how we engage with our audiences
  • Uphold and advance KERA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

  • A love for public radio journalism and desire to serve diverse audiences in North Texas and around the state
  • Excellent news-writing skills and a passion for pursuing innovation in digital news
  • Experience using a content management system to deliver website content
  • Familiarity with email and social media platforms and best practices for creating content on them
  • A self-starter who also works well in a team environment
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Experience working in journalism (or a related field) or a college degree in journalism, media (or a related field)
  • Knowledge of AP Style

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of communities and culture in North Texas and around the state
  • Experience creating social media and email content for a media outlet, business, nonprofit or government entity
  • Photography and videography skills
  • Experience editing photos and video
  • Graphic Design sensibilities
  • Experience producing, recording and engineering audio content for on-demand and broadcast platforms
  • Familiar with the Brightspot, Wordpress or Grove content management systems
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)

Salary Range:
$50,000 - $60,000, depending on experience

Location:
KERA is currently operating remotely due to the pandemic. When we return to the office, we will continue to provide flexibility for our staff to work remotely if they so choose. We expect that this position will eventually work out of our Dallas office at least 25% of the time.
