KERA is looking for a Podcast Producer to help develop new, dynamic on-demand content to grow, diversify and deeply engage audiences.

The station serves the country’s fifth-largest media market, reaching more than 2 million people weekly through KERA TVKERA NewsKXT and Art&Seek. For more than 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a destination for community engagement and lifelong learning.

Position Summary:
With the Managing Producer for Podcasts, this full-time Producer will help define and execute KERA’s podcast production and expansion. The Producer will assist in gathering tape, scheduling interviews, script writing, editing and other production duties as assigned. They will work with KERA’s Audience Development team to meet and engage target audiences with podcasts.   

In addition, the Producer will help develop new daily, limited and open-ended on-demand products that capitalize on the newsgathering capabilities of the KERA and Texas newsrooms. The ability to conceive of a new podcast’s digital presence is as important as the creation of the audio experience.

The ideal candidate is aware of current trends in podcasting and is a voracious listener of audio-based media. That interest should include established public-media productions as well as the ever-expanding world of for-profit media offerings – everything from true crime to experimental storytelling. They should have a firm grasp of how sound enhances the listening experience – and be fluent in the techniques that lead listeners to download podcasts in a crowded field of other worthy listens.

This person is a dynamic team player who is comfortable in a fast-turnaround environment and can also help assist with big-picture plans and projects. The ideal candidate is excited by the possibilities of public media and of the evolving media landscape in North Texas and beyond.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the daily production of existing KERA podcasts and the effort to continuously refine how the team can test, adjust and respond to audience data.
  • Assist in development and production of daily, series and limited run on-demand content, from entertainment to hard news that leverage the station’s newsgathering and deliver this public service to new, untapped audiences.
  • Work with both the news team and audience development team on strategies to market station podcasts through other KERA channels, social media and potential podcast partnerships.
  • Coordinate with KERA digital team to continuously evaluate the digital presence of current and future KERA on-demand audio products.
  • Maintain editorial standards of accuracy, thoroughness, ethics, balance and diversity.
  • Participate in KERA news meetings and fundraising campaigns and represent KERA in the community.
  • Uphold and advance KERA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Essential Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years in podcasting, journalism or relevant experience.
  • Intimate knowledge of podcasting best practices.
  • Expertise in audio editing and the ability to produce a high-quality listening experience in a fast-paced, daily setting.
  • Organized team player and problem solver with a wide variety of interests.
  • Familiarity with content management systems and podcast distribution platforms.
  • Success in meeting daily, weekly and longer-lead deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise sound news judgment and follow KERA ethics and editorial standards.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments.
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about public radio journalism and serving a diverse North Texas audience.
  • Ability to connect with and maintain relationships with diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, mass communications or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Audition, ProTools or other multitrack editing software.
  • Experience producing a variety of podcasts of styles: chat casts, longform, narrative interview and beyond.
  • Deep knowledge of North Texas people, cultures, issues, and geography as well as national and international issues, and events.
  • Fluent in multiple languages (Spanish preferred).
 
Salary Range: 
$60,000 - $65,000, depending on experience

Location: 
KERA is currently operating remotely due to the pandemic. When we return to the office, we will continue to provide flexibility for our staff to work remotely if they so choose. We expect that this position will eventually work out of our Dallas office at least 25% of the time.
