KERA is hiring a Technical Director and Editor as part of its Creative Services team to lead the creation of multiple types of video content for KERA and KXT’s platforms. This role will also work as a producer and editor for KERA productions.

Position Summary

The Technical Director is responsible for all aspects of the creation of multiple forms of custom content for KERA and KXT’s various platforms. The duties of this position involve all aspects of pre- and post-production, working with the content and audience development teams to develop, research and write intellectual and creative content. This position also serves as the Technical Director for KERA and KXT video productions.

The role requires a working knowledge of all studio equipment and coordinates the duties of every role on the crew. The Technical Director serves as the point person in the studio for executing a producer’s vision and manages the crew to perform their duties according to KERA standards. This position also directs live virtual events to stream on various web-based platforms.

This person will also work as an Editor for KERA productions. This part of the role requires a creative storyteller who uses visuals, sound and graphics to produce compelling content. The job responsibilities include off-site filming for various projects, editing short-form interstitials, series editing for broadcast television, audio mixing, managing an archival system for production assets and producing marketing and revenue content. The ability to see a project from pre-production through post-production and delivery for broadcast and digital platforms is crucial.

Essential Duties
 
  • Directs custom video shoots for live pledge nights and on-air custom TV promos
  • Manages the collection and implementation of assets and directs cast and crew during live virtual event streams
  • Meets with KERA producers or outside clients to understand their upcoming shoot / production
  • Prepares crew notes, conducts crew pre-production meetings, tech rehearsals with camera blocking & lighting, and talent rehearsals
  • Coordinates the shooting in TV studio by directing shot selection, graphics, video and audio roll-in insertion
  • Directs and operates camera and sound for off-site production
  • Writes, edits, and produces custom TV promos, interstitials, and station IDs, including content and fundraising initiatives, community engagement/educational content and testimonials
  • Edits digital and broadcast series and pledge materials
  • Digitizes or ingests media and preps for editing
  • Edits video by making good shot selections and adding titles, graphics, visual effects and sound
  • Delivers files to traffic, uploads to Web or ftp sites, servers, departments, or clients, authors DVDs, archives as necessary
  • Stays up to date on new technology and standards
  • Assess & implement efficient workflow with equipment & systems, while maintaining current documentation
  • Train new team members

Essential Qualifications

  • 3 years’ experience directing live, multi-camera shows in television studio and on location
  • 3 years’ experience with television production equipment including switcher, graphics character generator, video playout servers, cameras, studio clocks, lighting board and instruments, audio equipment, teleprompter, CCU, video scopes, etc.
  • Familiarity with web-based live streaming production tools and platforms
  • Ability to monitor multiple inputs simultaneously while directing team toward an overall goal
  • Good command of Adobe Premiere Pro required; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Audition, Adobe Media Encoder), Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro
  • Experience with cinema cameras, DSLR cameras, audio mixers, microphones, and lighting equipment
  • Ability to remain calm and think clearly under pressure, react quickly to changes
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical people
  • Ability to work under strict deadline with great attention to detail and little supervision
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects at the same time
  • Be able to rapidly learn new equipment and software
  • Excellent creative writing skills
  • Solid non-linear editing experience

Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Previous experience as a technical director, floor manager, and camera operator desirable.
  • Experience with these specific models a plus: TV Studio Switcher (Ross Vision), Character & Graphics Generator (Pixel Power Clarity), Servers (Omneon, Blackstorm, Avid AirSpeed), Studio Clock  (Alpermann+Velte), Waveform Monitor / Vectorscope (Harris Videotek), Clear-Com Communication System, Router (Utah Scientific), Lighting Board (ETC Express), Lighting Instruments (Mole-Richardson, Kliegl, KW, etc), Telepromptor  (TeleScript AV), Audio board (Solid State C10 HD), Studio Cameras (Ikegami HD), Camera Pedestals (Vision 250, Vinten)        
  • Passion for and experience in public broadcasting is a plus, but not required.
  • Fluent in multiple languages, Spanish preferred
 
Salary Range

$65,000 - $75,000, depending on experience 

Location 

KERA is partially operating remotely due to the pandemic. When we return to the office in 2022, we will continue to provide flexibility for our staff to work remotely if they so choose. We expect that this position will work out of our office at least 50% of the time, possibly more during on-air member campaigns.
