Role / What you will be doing
As a Clinical Abstractor I, you will be responsible for rapid data abstraction, data management and data analysis in the ORIEN & M2GEN Data Systems in compliance with ORIEN & project-level guidelines consistent with the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer accreditation program and other mandated reporting requirements. You will also be responsible for data retrieval, data comprehension and data integration in the full spectrum of all disease sites of cancer (Diagnosis; Clinical and Pathological Staging; SEER Summary Staging and Treatment Coding and classification). Working with M2GEN and ORIEN Member Site abstraction staff is required. Some business travel may be required.

Responsibilities (this is not an all-inclusive list; duties may evolve over time as business needs change)
  • Data abstraction, collecting all required diagnostic, staging, treatment and outcomes information in compliance with ORIEN & project-level guidelines.
  • Review of clinical data discrepancies as part of the clinical data validation process.
  • Review of clinical data received compared to information provided in the tissue manifest as part of the clinical data validation process.
  • Participate in quality assurance projects to assisting in providing better quality data.

Education / Experience
  • Associate’s Degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or other related field.
  • Must be a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
  • Minimum one (1) year or more experience in analyzing, coding and abstracting medical records
  • One (1) year or more experience working with a computerized cancer registry database
  • Experience utilizing database technology and EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system
  • Minimum one (1) year or more working knowledge of medical technology
  • Minimum one (1) year or more working with Microsoft Office and other PC database applications
Preferred Experience
  • Minimum one (1) year or more cancer registry abstracting experience in an American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer NCI designated or teaching/research approved program
  • Oncology specific technology
  • Strong typing skills and demonstration of strong verbal, written, listening and analytical skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a quickly changing environment
  • Relevant experience as outlined above in research, academic, scientific or healthcare community

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Knowledge of oncology drug development process from basic research to post marketing surveillance
  • Knowledge of the disease process, diagnostic methods, and procedures
  • Composition of the health record
  • Data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills
  • Skilled in the use of the following standardized coding and classification sets:  International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O), Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Multiple Primary and Histology rule set, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Coding Manual and Database, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) RX - Interactive Drug Database, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM direct staging of all cancer sites, Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), and the ORIEN & Avatar Data Acquisition Manual
