Location:  Baltimore, MD

Salary Range:  $125,000 – $150,000 + full benefits package
Reports to:  Baltimore Children and Youth Fund Board of Directors

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
BCYF is seeking an individual to lead our community-led grantmaking process and the technical assistance and capacity building offerings to our grantees.  Our ideal candidate knows Baltimore's history and the community-based organizations that serve our children and youth and has meaningful and relevant experience in leading and managing teams and programs. We are a brand-new organization, so your experience in collaborative leadership while concurrently building teamwork, culture and processes are crucial to BCYF's success. 

BCYF is building a community resource and grantmaking organization for those who have been historically underfunded, disenfranchised and ignored. Rooted in a Black liberatory framework, BCYF supports grassroots organizations that serve our children and youth as we transform Baltimore's current philanthropic landscape.

MORE ABOUT THE ROLE
BCYF is seeking its first Vice President of Grantmaking and Technical Assistance (VPGMTA), responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership, and management for BCYF's strategic investments.  The Vice President will work collaboratively as a member of the executive leadership team.


The VPGMTA leads the strategic investments, portfolio management, and technical assistance functions. Reporting to the President, the VPGMTA provides an active voice in the organization's strategic decision-making, and designs and implements systems and protocols to ensure effective participatory, inclusive, and impactful investment, integrating community engagement and racial equity into all aspects of BCYF's investment strategy. This role leads a team of staff and consultants.

Essential functions include:
  • Strategic Planning and Direction: With the President and executive leadership team, co-lead a strategic planning process for the organization that will define the direction of BCYF every three years, starting in FY2022; position BCYF to be a model for local impact, as well as state and national replication
  • Leadership and Management: Actively engage and energize Board members, staff, grantees, alumni, partnering organizations, funders, and the community at large, and ensure consistent quality of programmatic excellence, program evaluation, and systems; provide thoughtful and visionary leadership that is equitable, inclusive, transparent, and consistent with BCYF's mission
  • Grantmaking: Lead cross-departmental engagement in program design, planning, implementation, and reporting for strategic investments, participatory grantmaking, portfolio management, grantee and community-based technical assistance, and efficient and appropriate staffing for program execution consistent with best practices and BCYF values
  • Portfolio Management: Create processes and systems that will enable the Investment/Program Officers and Technical Assistance providers to support and manage grantee progress and performance during the grant period; work closely with Investment team leaders and communications to elevate grantees' works and disseminate stories and lessons learned about the impact of investment and grantmaking initiatives
  • Technical Assistance: Lead the planning and execution of grantee convenings, webinars, and trainings collaborate with staff and consultants to design content and curriculum that will advance grantees and participants’ understanding of, capacities and skills in youth development, participatory philanthropy, and organizational development
  • Board Support: Support the President in managing the Board to build consensus, offer support and guidance, and thought partnership; attend all Board meetings and provide reports and updates on strategic investments; develop Board and staff learning agendas and facilitate engagement that advances organizational learning
  • Ambassadorship: Serve as a spokesperson for BCYF publicly at events, conferences, and partnership meetings; ensure high visibility, and identify opportunities for BCYF to diversify its revenue sources and cultivate partnerships and collaborations

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Combining inspirational leadership and sophisticated management abilities, the successful candidate will have previous experience in a similar role or in a senior leadership position, experience moving an organization through the startup phase, and advancing an organization in terms of culture, capability, processes, and impact. While no candidate will possess every quality, the successful candidate will possess many of the following qualifications, attributes, and experiences.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of prior experience in a similar or senior leadership role in strategic grantmaking and/or participatory grantmaking at a community-based organization/initiative, nonprofit, foundation, government agency, or related organization
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in strategy development, leading community-based initiatives or nonprofit management, and participatory giving
  • Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with Racial Equity and Inclusion principles; Proactively advances outcomes to operationalize equity.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness and emotional intelligence: Able to reflect on and describe the impact of one’s own identities—and those of others; Able to hear, reflect, act on, and learn from feedback re: identity and equity

Related Experience:
  • Executive Leadership: history of providing visionary leadership at the executive or senior level
  • Board Relations: Proven experience working with and leading a Board 
  • Racial Equity/Liberatory Practice: experience with navigating the dynamics of institutional racism in ways that effectively challenges the status quo using anti-racist practices
  • Context: Demonstrated understanding of grassroots organizations and the history of philanthropy in America (and Baltimore) and the impact within BIPOC communities. Demonstrated understanding of the environments in which BYCF operates -- political, civic, community, philanthropic, youth-serving ecosystems.
  • Evaluation: Demonstrated experience of effectively leading and scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization
  • Organizational Development: Exceptional organizational and infrastructure development expertise, with an emphasis on recognizing patterns in institutions that might be leveraged to advance racial equity
  • Collective Leadership: Experience creating a leadership culture that allows staff and Board to drive organizational change from ideation to implementation; receive and share feedback and make necessary adjustments
  • Collaboration: Strong ability to work closely with others (internal teams, city officials, Baltimore community, and with external partners) to build collaborative workflow systems and partnerships within a complex organizational structure
  • Infrastructure: Demonstrated experience with developing systems that ensure organizational, fiscal, and fiduciary transparency to the community and effective business operational function
  • Developing talent: Experience with hiring and further developing talented team members, willingness to develop team members based on their strengths, expertise, and experience
  • Communication: Excellent written, oral, and public speaking skills: strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders
  • Articulation: Elaborate on what is meant by the statement "Nothing about us without us"; have a strong commitment to racial and economic equity
  • Transparency: Commitment to consistent communication to the community about BCYF's processes, strategy, and future direction
  • Empowerment: Believe in people's rights and abilities to determine and shape for themselves the directions their families and communities should take and value community members' inclusion and participation in resource allocation.

About Baltimore Children & Youth Fund, Incorporated

The Baltimore Children and Youth Fund, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was created as a dedicated fund to support programs for Baltimore’s young people. The concept of the Baltimore Children and Youth Fund was launched in 2015 by then-City Council President Bernard “Jack” C. Young as a response to the unrest in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, an event that sharply illuminated longstanding inequities in public funding in Black communities. In 2016, the Baltimore City Council and voters approved the Fund to receive an annual appropriation of assessed value of all property in Baltimore. Baltimore Children and Youth Fund, Inc. (BCYF, Inc.) was named the permanent intermediary of the Fund. BCYF, Inc.’s budget is approximately $14 million annually, with $2 million in operating expenses and $12 million in direct grantmaking investments.
