BFL is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.  Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and non-residential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence.  Services include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training; occupational therapy; short- and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems; and referrals to outside services.

About Secret Garden (SG)
One of BFL’s longest-standing programs is the community-based domestic violence program, otherwise known as  Secret Garden, which provides case management, safety planning, occupational therapy, short and long-term individual trauma-informed counseling, advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems, and referrals to outside services. These services are provided at  Secret Garden’s main office, as well as a Family Justice Centers located in the five boroughs.

Barrier Free Living is seeking qualified applicants to join our team. The Deaf Services Case Manager will report to the Program Director of SG and will be required to perform the following duties and responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate concrete case management services, information, referral, and advocacy
  • Collaborate between clinical teams at The Secret Garden and Freedom House
  • Provide case management to D/deaf/Hard of Hearing survivors of domestic violence
  • Conduct outreach to service agencies, and form collaborative partnerships around access to services
  • Conduct screenings of calls from the domestic violence hotline and online chat
  • Provide crisis intervention and other services required to assist survivors
  • Complete individualized service plans for survivors related to ongoing recovery, benefits and housing assistance needs, safety planning, and other emerging issues; also, ensuring appropriate follow-up activities related to service plan goals and benchmarks
  • Participate in staff/program meetings and trainings including but not limited to CPR, First Aid, crisis prevention and Undoing Racism workshops, partner program meetings, and conferences
  • Ensure prompt and accurate entry of case notes and other related program statistics, as requested, including document and complete the necessary forms at The Secret Garden and Freedom House
EDUCATION
  • BA preferred or equivalent degree
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Case management experience in the field of domestic violence and persons living with disabilities and the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing preferred
  • D/deaf or Hard of Hearing person preferred
  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and excellent written English required
  • Knowledge in navigating organizations, systems, and community-based resources in New York City
  • Ability to work in a crisis management environment
  • Strong abilities to advocate on behalf of survivors
  • Effective written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills required
  • Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination required

Start Date: Immediately Contract End: September 2022

Hourly Rate: $25.22
 
Status: Full Time/Exempt
Hours per week: 35
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.  A minimum of one day on-site at Secret Garden. ​​​​​Until further changes due to COVID-19 Regulations, as of now, remote work is arranged on the rest of the working days including meetings.
Equipment Operated:  Computer/Laptop, Printer, Scanner, Phone, Adaptive Dives, etc.
Work Environment:
This position will spend time at the program site and have an independent (private) office.
Travel:
A minimum of one day on-site per week at Secret Garden. ​​​​​Until further changes due to COVID-19 Regulations, as of now, remote work is arranged on the rest of the working days including meetings. (Subject to change.)
