We primarily serve youth in middle and high schools, while providing employment opportunities and counseling supports to our alumni.

Located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the campus is anchored by the state-of-the-art Gary Comer Youth Center, Gary Comer College Prep High School and Middle School. Position Summary
The GCYC Post-Secondary Success Counselor is responsible for supporting all GCYC seniors in their post-secondary program search and application process. These goals will be primarily met through counseling students and families at the Comer Education Campus on the college and other post-secondary program application process. This includes working with students and families to explore collegiate and progressive pathway programs, managing the application process, and helping student to transition into Comer’s post-secondary support program, UtmostU. The counselor will meet with students both individually and in small groups to discuss the college search, application, and transition process.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Planning and Development
  • Revise and Update College 101 Curriculum as needed
  • Revise and Update GCYC Benchmark Curriculum as needed
  • Coordinate the annual GCYC Senior Ceremony.
  • Plan and lead periodic college exploration trips and events with support of Manager of Post-Secondary Programs and Upward Bound Coordinator.
  • Direct Student Instruction and Recruitment
  • Work closely with the GCYC members, families and staff to support, track, and counsel students on the post-secondary application and financial aid processes using the GCYC benchmark system.
  • Instruct regular “College 101” workshops and Senior Seminar Series.
  • Work with UtmostU Staff to recruit and interview students for UtmostU alumni support program.
  • Work with UtmostU Staff to onboard students into alumni support program.
  • Reach out to, connect with, track out comes for class of 2020 and 2021 graduates who did not enroll into UtmostU
  • Work with UtmostU Staff to enroll unsupported class of 2020 and 2021 graduates into UtmostU or relevant post-secondary support program.
  • Work closely with Gary Comer College Prep (GCCP) Senior Collegiate Scholars (SCS) teachers to support the counseling work of GCYC/GCCP members.
Other:
  • Support the mission of GCYC and attend designated staff meetings and trainings.
  • Take on other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Abide by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.
Miscellaneous:
  • Responsible for maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment to further ensure proper youth supervision and managing conduct issues and incidents.
  • Attends required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Works with other staff to execute effective outreach, recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Responsible for accurate data collection and data entry for grant and program compliance.
  • Supports the mission of GCYC.
  • Works collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.
  • Is committed to the safety and development of all GCYC members.
  • Takes on other duties as needed.
  • Serves as a role model for youth and community.
  • Abides by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the college application processes, financial aid process, and academic support programs.
  • Prior college counseling experience preferred
 
Education & Skill Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3+ years of experience working with or high school and/or college aged students.

  • Must have basic computer literacy skills – including Microsoft Office, independent use of the internet and ability to learn and properly utilize software systems.
 
Physical Work Requirements & Environment:
The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members. The Center’s work is fast paced and varied. Our work is done on site where our youth and families are. Therefore, it is required that team members meet these requirements:
  • Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Possess the ability to walk during field trips and to complete building and program rounds.
  • Be able to stand and move with youth during programs, field trips and special events throughout the day.
  • Must be able to ride various modes of transportation including school and coach buses, airplanes, cars, vans and public transportation.
  • Can operate in crowds or with small groups.
  • Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
  • A flexible schedule for evening and some weekend hours is required during school year. Summer hours have a more traditional work schedule.
