Reading and Beyond is seeking applications of interest for its Chief Executive Officer position. This opportunity is available due to the retirement of the current Executive Director.  For over 20 years, Reading and Beyond has been actively serving thousands of families and individuals across Fresno, Kings, and Madera counties in California. Our mission is to “empower children and families to live productive, self-reliant lives.”  We’re helping families transition from poverty to productive and rewarding lives by providing a holistic array of services tailored specifically to the needs of each family.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Reading and Beyond’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.      
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to the following):
 
  • Provides leadership to the management team, actively engages with all volunteers, board members, committees, and other partnerships to achieve strategic goals for programmatic excellence including finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.   
  • Expands revenue-generating and fundraising activities by deepening and refining all aspects of communications, including web presence to external relations, and seeking new opportunities.
  • Builds partnerships and establishes relationships with new funders, political and community leaders; maintains an external presence by communicating program results and successes via diverse communication modes.  
  • Identifies with and displays a commitment to the mission, philosophy, and objectives of the Organization.
  • Demonstrates and fosters legal and ethical behaviors and practices in all professional activities, both inside and outside the Organization, as a role model for employees.
  • Effectively leads continuous improvement and change efforts, ensures changes are accomplished, holds others accountable, challenges the status quo, champions appropriate change initiatives, and creates an environment that encourages and supports change initiatives.
  • Facilitates teamwork, participation, and cooperation to accomplish objectives; delegates duties, provides performance feedback, and fosters a work environment which encourages others to develop their personal and functional competencies.
  • Establishes objectives linked to supporting the Organization’s strategic plan and determines resources and action required to accomplish objectives.  Sets priorities and manages time effectively.
  • Responsible for performance management, ensuring that all staff understand their role, jointly establishing objectives and performance criteria, providing ongoing feedback and formal reviews.
  • Ensures personnel decisions including corrective actions comply with federal and state employment laws and regulations, promotes equal employment opportunity.
  • Makes decisions by analyzing problems and opportunities, gathering pertinent facts, considering alternatives, and using sound judgment.
  • Is innovative in developing new and unique ideas to improve existing systems or operations, seeking creative ways to resolve conflicts and encourage prudent risk taking.
  • Communicates and listens effectively, supporting an open and honest climate of teamwork and collaboration.  Demonstrates exceptional internal and external customer service.
  • Maintains the necessary level of professional knowledge and technical proficiency in areas of functional responsibility through continued learning.
 
Education and/or Experience:

  • Master’s degree or Doctoral degree in Human Services, Vocational Rehabilitation, Counseling, Social work, or relevant area preferred.
  • Minimum five years of progressive senior management experience; track record of effectively leading and scaling a performance and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Proven organizational/time management experience and proficient computer skills for planning, budgeting, and documentation.
  • Exceptional leadership and analytical abilities: adept in oral and written communication, presentation, and relational skills.
  • Must maintain a valid California driver’s license with acceptable DMV driving record, personal automobile liability insurance, and reliable transportation, which may be used in the course of work.
