Located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the campus is anchored by the state-of-the-art Gary Comer Youth Center, Gary Comer College Prep High School and Middle School. Position Summary

The Urban Agriculture Production Assistant plays a key role in the dynamic urban agriculture programs based on the Comer Education Campus on the South Side of Chicago. Reporting to the Urban Agriculture Director, the Garden Assistant supports a full range of planning, growing, distribution, training and educational activities on the Comer Education Campus (CEC). The Garden Assistant is a steward of the CEC network of gardens, including an 8,600 square foot intensive rooftop garden, an environmental education garden, an indoor hydroponics operation, and a 1.75 acre urban farm with hoop houses, annual vegetables, perennials, fruit trees, and more. By maintaining the gardens to a high standard, the Garden Assistant creates and strengthens social enterprises, learning, and youth development opportunities derived from the gardens. This highly collaborative position directly supports all educational and programming efforts of the urban agriculture department.

 

Position Summary:

The Safety & Security Manager has full responsibility for the design and implementation of safety and security policies and procedures, which provide for the Comer Education Campus to be secure and conducive for the youth and families we serve. The manager will assure that members receive the proper advocacy, intervention, and direction in matters related to safety and security. With the Comer Education Campus and the Gary Comer Youth Center being a safe haven, the Safety & Security Manager has to promote a physically and emotionally safe space for all stakeholders while on the property. This leader is also responsible for all training, drills, and initiatives designed to achieve our goals in this area of our work.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

· Develop safety and security policies, reporting, record keeping, and operating procedures that promote the safe use of the Campus and all off-campus sites

· Manage staff hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation

· Must be able to report to the Executive Director and Chief Impact Officer, in a timely matter regarding incidents that impact the campus within 24 hours (in business day).

· Design and implement an Emergency Plan with the leadership team, public agencies, and enforce compliance

· Facilitate all department and organizational staff training, and lead campus evacuation and lockdown drills

· Manage all physical security equipment and ensure in proper working order at all times using the organization’s work system for preventative and requested work

· Maintain and execute security plans for events which may include dignitaries and large crowds

· Serve as a leader in all safety communications including other campus partners regarding youth conflicts and incidents that happen under the supervision of GCYC

· Provide relevant information for first responders during emergency medical, fire, and police matters

· Builds relationships with community service providers such as fire and police to enhance the security of the campus

· Ensure that GCYC and its grounds, along with the Comer Education Campus administrative offices are physically surveilled by safety officers. This function is supported by camera surveillance but cannot be substituted by camera surveillance

· Understand the use of mandatory reporting for youth and trains staff accordingly

· Facilitates various safety training and workflows including CPR training, key, and 2-way radio assignments

· Responsible for all administrative needs such as preparing and managing budgets as led by Finance and all routine reporting and recordkeeping

· Prioritize the safety of all guests, members, and staff

· Serves as the first responder to fire and burglar alarm calls

· Contribute new ideas and projects which lead to a more secure environment

 

Essential Qualifications & Requirements

· Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety, security, risk management with at least 2 years in a leadership role required

· Minimum 3 years of experience working with youth required

· Training and education in a related field of safety or security with a degree required (equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree)

· Knowledge and skills in safety and security regulations and compliance matters required

· Excellent youth mediation skills with the ability to resolve and prevent conflicts, and the ability to communicate with parents and guardians required

· Excellent written and oral communication skills and customer service skills required

· Demonstrated cultural competency, dedication to working with youth, families, and community members in our care required

· Competency in MS Office applications, various security tech platforms, including access and visitor control, and surveillance camera required

· Will be required to adjust work schedule temporarily or permanently based on campus and GCYC needs, including special events and seasonal programming

· Ability to analyze data and use data for improvement
