AUDIENCE EDITOR, KERA NEWS

KERA, the public broadcasting organization for North Texas is hiring an Audience Editor to serve as our Newsroom’s lead digital journalist and play a key role in developing and executing initiatives to grow, diversify and engage our audiences across platforms.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE:
The Audience Editor will lead a team of professionals and multi-departmental collaboration to create an audience-centered and purpose-driven organization. We are looking for a strong journalist with a keen eye for user experience, product development and digital engagement. In collaboration with the KERA newsroom, external partners, producers, the audience development team and other senior staff, this position is responsible for the creation, curation, editing, and implementation of daily news and information on KERAnews.org and its related digital channels, including social media, email and virtual events.

The Audience Editor reports to the Executive Editor, and is an FLSA classified exempt position, not eligible for overtime.

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 
 Optimize content: 
  • Edit and produce audience-centered content for KERAnews.org 
  • Write and edit copy, workshop headlines and work with reporters on SEO and other best practices for KERAnews.org and social media platforms 
  • Assist reporters in augmenting stories with graphics, photography, video, data and promotion and engagement opportunities 
  • Work with KERA newsroom to deliver breaking news online 
  • Work with editors and executive leadership to assess content from a variety of sources to determine where and how it fits into daily coverage and user needs 
  • Work collaboratively with KERA’s local, statewide and national partners, including Fort Worth Report, The Dallas Morning News, The Texas Newsroom and NPR.
  • Serve as the newsroom expert on CMS (Grove), training and assisting staff  

Develop audience: 
  • Work with senior staff to refine and implement strategy and vision for digital operations, product development, audience growth and engagement 
  • With audience development, provide leadership and oversight of newsroom products, including social accounts, email newsletters, websites, apps and other platforms 
  • Collaborate with reporters and producers to serve targeted audiences with targeted content on preferred platforms 
  • Work with audience development and revenue department to monetize digital audiences and convert digital users to membership 
  • Assist data team with weekly and monthly data reports and actionable analysis

  • Five years of experience in a public media or news organization, with considerable time spent in digital editing, visual journalism, product development or content creation
  • Experience managing people and teams
  • Demonstrated data-driven judgment, analysis and understanding of KPIs
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills, proven news judgment, and journalistic integrity
  • Ability to multitask and work on diverse projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate, take direction and work independently as well as collaboratively with various personalities
  • Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  • Knowledge of North Texas area and the issues facing the state of Texas

BONUS IF YOU BRING:
  • Knowledge of communities and culture in North Texas and around the state
  • Photography and videography expertise
  • Graphic Design sensibilities
  • Experience producing, recording and engineering audio content for on-demand and broadcast platforms
  • Familiar with the Brightspot, Wordpress or Grove content management systems
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)

SALARY RANGE
 $70,000 – $90,000, depending on experience

LOCATION:
KERA is currently operating partially remotely due to the pandemic, and this job will primarily be performed remotely at this time. We expect that this position will eventually work out of our office at least 50% of the time.
