Position Summary
As a part of the Comer College team, the Upward Bound Summer Instructor works with low-income, first-generation, rising 10th – 12th grade students to help them develop the skills needed to become successful college graduates. The Upward Bound Summer Instructor provides engaging and rigorous academic instruction for teens in multiple academic subjects including math, literature, composition, and foreign language (at least two of the subjects listed).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Implement agreed upon curriculum offerings which could include SAT Prep, Math, STEM, or English Language Arts.
  • Design and implement engaging project-driven lesson plans, including submitting a syllabus of intended lessons.
  • Conference with students as needed.
  • Attend orientation and training.
  • Complete program evaluations and all other necessary reporting.
  • Work collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.

Miscellaneous:
  • Responsible for maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment to further ensure proper youth supervision and managing conduct issues and incidents.
  • Attends required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Works with other staff to execute effective outreach, recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Responsible for accurate data collection and data entry for grant and program compliance.
  • Supports the mission of GCYC.
  • Works collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.
  • Is committed to the safety and development of all GCYC members.
  • Takes on other duties as needed.
  • Serves as a role model for youth and community.
  • Abides by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, troubleshoot and problem solve effectively.
  • Strong computer and writing skills, especially with the creation of presentations and MS Office Suite. 
  • Demonstration of cultural competency, dedication to working with youth, families and community members in our care.


Education & Skill Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of one year of teaching experience required in applicable subject, two or more years preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong commitment to working with students and families from low socioeconomic backgrounds

Physical Work Requirements & Environment:
The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members.  The Center’s work is fast paced and varied.  Our work is done on site where our youth and families are.   Therefore, it is required that team members meet these requirements:
 
  • Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Possess the ability to walk during field trips and to complete building and program rounds.
  • Be able to stand and move with youth during programs, field trips and special events throughout the day.
  • Must be able to ride various modes of transportation including school and coach buses, airplanes, cars, vans and public transportation.
  • Can operate in crowds or with small groups.
  • Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
