Salary:                          Salary will be based on education and experience, expected to be $70,000-$80,000/year

The Comer Education Campus (CEC) has been recognized as one of the most unique youth-serving organizations in the nation.  Our mission is to help young people prepare to be well rounded global citizens who are ready for college and careers.  We primarily serve youth in middle and high schools, while providing employment opportunities and counseling supports to our alumni.

Located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the campus is anchored by the state-of-the-art Gary Comer Youth Center, Gary Comer College Prep High School and Gary Comer Middle School.  Programming is offered in three primary categories: academics, enrichment, and college and career preparation.  Together we serve nearly 2,000 young people annually.

Position Summary 
CEC is seeking an outstanding Human Resources Manager to lead our HR department under the direction of the Executive Director, and with accountability to the leadership team.  The Associate Director of Human Resources is responsible for four key areas: HR Operations including compliance, payroll and benefits management; Talent Acquisition including employee recruiting, campus/intern recruiting, and staff onboarding; Employee Engagement & Success including training, career path development, design and execution of compensation plans, executive and manager coaching and employee retention; and Reinforcing Culture/Values including running employee recognition programs and other programs reinforcing the company’s culture and values.  The Manager of Human Resources will also lead the work of the HR Coordinator, our PEO/benefits provider, and other outside HR related outside consultants.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • HR Operations:
    • Lead the annual benefits selection process and coordinate implementation with the benefits provider/PEO.
    • Lead the HR Coordinator and the Finance team’s work to ensure the accuracy of our HRIS system and payroll processes.
    • Review, update and train staff on the requirements and resources contained in our HR Manual and HR Teams site.
    • Keeps abreast of best practices, changes, and trends in the field of human resources within educational nonprofits and considers how recommendations will impact the operations of the GCYC.
    • Manage and comply with Covid-19 updates and requirements, including vaccination tracking and testing requirements.  
    • Develop and manage the HR Department’s budget
  • Talent Acquisition:
    • Develop and drive strategic recruitment, engagement and retention plans.
    • Coordinate the recruiting and selection process for all levels of employment candidates using innovative methods to source and attract top talent
    • Supervise the HR Coordinator’s work executing the recruitment and onboarding process
  • Employee Engagement & Success:
    • Ensure the fair and equal treatment of employees by interpreting and administering CEC’s policies and practices consistently and transparently.
    • Actively develop diversity and inclusion initiatives by reviewing and implementing cultural strategies, processes, and organizational practices that support individual worth and dignity and where all are equally valued, engaged, recognized, and rewarded.
    • Investigate confidential employee relations issues, complaints, and grievances, and exercises sound discretionary judgment in recommending resolutions.
    • Proactively advise, counsel, and coach supervisors and management on employee relations and management issues. 
    • Evaluates, revises, and oversees the administration of the annual performance management processes.   
    • Collaborates with leadership to create clear professional development opportunities and career paths.
    • Manage offboarding processes including conducting exit interviews and coordinating with the appropriate departments to complete the offboarding process.

Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field of study Is required, PHR certification preferred
    • At least 5 years of Human Resources generalist experience (previous HR experience in a community based nonprofit preferred)
    • Demonstrated track record of executing all HR functions and current knowledge of legal issues in HR with the ability to teach and train others
    • Ability to build trust and credibility among the work force, along with ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with integrity
    • Skilled in mediation and conflict resolution used to prevent and resolve employee concerns
    • Competency in working with MS Office and HRIS systems
    • Competency in developing and managing HR budgets
    • Excellent time management and communication skills
    • Demonstrated cultural competency for the youth and community serviced on the Campus

    • Demonstrated experience developing, documenting and sustaining key HR processes
    • Excellent coaching skills to assist executives and managers.

Physical Work Requirements & Environment:  
The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members.  The Center’s work is fast paced and varied.  Our work is done on site where our youth and families are.   Therefore, it is required that team members meet the following requirements: 
  • Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds. 
  • Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
