Job Summary:  The Controller will manage all financial reporting activities for the Finance Division. This role is responsible for supporting the CFO in managing all accounting records and will be responsible to produce financial reports ensuring they meet GAAP and Statutory standards. The Controller will also work directly with the external auditors and will help ensure the completion of annual audits.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage accounting and general ledger activities
  • Maintain financial records in accordance with statutory accounting principles for the property and casualty insurance companies.
  • Maintain financial records in accordance with GAAP for the non-insurance subsidiaries.
  • Oversight of custodial, investment and treasury functions.
  • Direct reinsurance accounting and recoverable collection processes.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable; fixed assets; and all general ledger activities
  • Understand the general ledger application software. Provide training to the staff as needed. Oversee testing for upgrades as needed.
  • Works closely with IT, Operations and Claims in vetting processes and systems required for successful enterprise, financial management implementation and ongoing maintenance.
Complete reporting and compliance activities
  • Preparation of financial statements on a statutory basis for the property and casualty insurance companies.
  • Preparation of financial statements on a GAAP basis for the non-insurance subsidiaries.
  • Direct the proper filing of financial statements and other related reports to various state regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare premium tax returns and filings.
  • Develop and maintain the accounting policies for the companies.
  • Understand and implement ongoing reporting and compliance activities.
Oversee budgets and budget reporting
  • Implement annual budgeting process and financial forecasts and report variances for all entities.
  • Understand and manage cash flow needs of the Companies.
Coordinate all audit activities
  • Maintain relationships with the Company’s external auditors and directs staff in supplying the required information to facilitate the annual audit to ensure complete and accurate federal and state income tax filings.
  • Coordinate with independent actuarial resources in determining sufficiency of financial reserves.
  • Work with state regulatory agencies during financial exams.
Recruit, hire, train, development, motivate, manage, and lead staff to perform successfully
  • Continually assess the effectiveness of departmental functioning, including the people, processes and technologies needed to achieve departmental and corporate goals and objectives. Identify problems and opportunities for improvement and generate creative solutions that improve qualitative and quantitative performance.
  • Oversee the employees within the department, including the production, workload, performance review with related merit increases and promotions.
Education, Experience and Licensing Requirements
  • BA in Accounting or Finance, Master’s degree (MBA) strongly preferred.
  • CPA required.
  • 7+ years’ Property & Casualty Insurance experience.
  • Complete Yellow Book Statutory reporting and preparation is required.
  • 7+ years’ experience leading a team of financial professionals.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft software packages.
