Position reports to: HR Coordinator 

Status: Part-Time Seasonal 6/6-8/31; 20 hours weekly; varied schedule; hybrid (in person and work from home) 

Salary: $20 per hour

The Comer Education Campus (CEC) has been recognized as one of the most unique youth-serving organizations in the nation. Our mission is to help young people prepare to be well rounded global citizens who are ready for college and careers. We primarily serve youth in middle and high schools, while providing employment opportunities and counseling supports to our alumni. 

Located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the campus is anchored by the state-of-the-art Gary Comer Youth Center, Gary Comer College Prep High School and Gary Comer Middle School. Programming is offered in three primary categories: academics, enrichment, and college and career preparation. Together we serve nearly 2,000 young people annually. 

Position Summary  

GCYC is looking for a dynamic HR and Payroll professional to serve in the essential role of HR/Payroll Administrator for the Summer Youth Employment Program. In this position, you will assist youth and young adult workers with orientation and onboarding, completing all SYEP related data entry into our payroll system, and managing their HR and Payroll needs. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: 

  • Assisting with orientation and onboarding for youth and young adults.  

  • Gathering and examining timesheets to ensure their validity. 

  • Entering work shift times into the payroll software. 

  • Ensuring that compensation is calculated at the appropriate rate. 

  • Confirming payroll has been processed correctly. 

  • HRIS Data Entry. 

  • Performing all HRIS tasks before the pay run to ensure that staff members are compensated and notified on time. 

  • Addressing queries about time and attendance and payroll-related issues. 

  • Working to resolve discrepancies in payments as a matter of urgency. 

  • Other HR/Payroll Duties as assigned for Summer Youth Employment Program.

Qualifications:  

  • College degree or relevant experience required.  

  • Previous experience as a in HR or Payroll. 

  • Familiarity with payroll software; experience with Insperity preferred but not required. 

  • Excellent data entry, data cleaning, and Microsoft Excel skills. 

  • Knowledge of legislation and procedures pertaining to salary deductions. 

  • Capacity to keep track of numerous ongoing tasks. 

  • Adherence to all prescribed ethical guidelines, including confidentiality. 

  • Strong sense of integrity. 

  • Able to commit to 20+ hours per week. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks, be organized and meet deadlines. 

  • Must have basic computer literacy skills – including Microsoft Office, independent use of the internet and ability to learn and properly utilize software systems.   

  • Abides by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.

Physical Work Requirements & Environment:   

The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members. The Center’s work is fast paced and varied. Our work is done on site where our youth and families are.  Therefore, it is required that team members meet the following requirements:  

  • Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.  

  • Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
