The Wildfire Research Engineer/Scientist will work within the Wildfire research team to plan/manage and execute innovative full scale research projects aimed at better understanding how the built environment is vulnerable to wildfires how and how buildings can be hardened to reduce their impact on the communities the effect. As part of a multidisciplinary team or researchers, production, media and public policy professionals you will translate the state-of-the-art science into to reduce the impact wildfires have on communities. Team member must be authorized to work in the US. We are a fully vaccinated facility.
Summary: Independently manage and execute research projects at the IBHS Research Center under the supervision of the Managing Director of Research. Provide engineering leadership/assistance to other research staff, as well as participate in planning of future research programs and projects towards IBHS’ strategic goals identified by the Research Advisory Council.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Works with engineering team to prepare research plans, developing scope of project, schedule, budgeting and coordination with outside vendors to resolve technical issues. Assists in the identification of research needs and in the planning of studies that will support the strategic goals identified by the Research Advisory Council, including a robust program of developing and documenting cost-effective approaches to strengthening building codes and test standards. Prepares, manages and executes specific detailed plans for assigned testing programs: specimen design, number of test specimens needed, instrumentation / measurement needs, data collection methods, expected video and photographic opportunities, data analysis and reporting. Conducts research, analyzes results and prepares reports that document the research. Draw conclusions from the research results, and create recommendations, some of which may include proposed changes to building codes and other construction standards that enhance the protection of buildings and their occupants from natural disasters. Acts as a team member during major field studies to assess the performance of buildings and structures that have been subjected to a major natural or man-made hazard event. Provides content to the Communications Department, as necessary, for technical development or revision of IBHS documents, website information, and videos. Presents relevant goals, research, and findings to members and outside audiences at conferences, journal publications and through webinars. Works collaboratively cross functionally in a highly matrixed organization on fabrication, instrumentation, movement, and testing for research projects.

Education: Bachelors or equivalent in engineering or related science field; advanced degree preferred.
Experience: Two (2) or more years of related field and laboratory experimentation experience

• Ability to effectively communicate detailed instruction to contractors and technical staff, through written correspondence and verbal communication.
