Position Summary
Evaluate and assess more complex medical, financial, and large amount cases accurately based on company guidelines and policies. Establish and maintain positive relations and effective communication with our internal and external customers to increase customer satisfaction. Be viewed as a technical leader and subject matter expert. Act as referral underwriter and trainer for less experienced underwriters.

Confidently answer questions regarding underwriting rules / procedures and discuss decisions with internal and external stakeholders to explain the rational for underwriting decisions. Handle sensitive information with discretion and diplomacy.

Additionally, the individual will:
  • Have proven competency in aspects of Life Insurance Underwriting and general knowledge of medical and financial terms and impairments, preferred and impaired risk, and legal aspects of insurance contracts and underwriting guidelines.
  • Have proficiency in the use of the Swiss Re Underwriting Manual, reading Attending Physician’s Statements, evaluating information reported to the Medical Information Bureau, reviewing Motor Vehicle Records, and using underwriting workflow software to manage daily work.
  • Adhere to and ensure accurate and consistent application of Everlake’s Underwriting Policies and Procedures.  Evaluate risks according to established guidelines making determinations of the terms, coverage, and rating classification within designated approval limits.
  • Continually look for ways to improve underwriting efficiency and quality.  Demonstrate a willingness to question established practices and challenge others in a professional manner. Enhance departmental outcomes by sharing knowledge and collaborating with team members.
  • Manage the team of underwriters handling the daily underwriting responsibilities (team calendar / timekeeping, goals, checkpoints, annual reviews, and salary planning)
  • Manage underwriting workflow and track metrics related to underwriting volumes and cycle times
  • Develop and maintain an underwriting audit process to monitor underwriting quality and adherence to underwriting policies and procedures
  • Lead/direct APS Summarizer team and collaborate with their local management
  • Collaborate with outsourced medical director team and track billable hours
  • Handle referrals for consultant level underwriters and complex cases from all underwriters
  • Handle field escalations on rate disputes and complaints
  • Handle MIB request for code details, plan F investigations, accuracy disputes, recissions and coordinates annual MIB audit.
  • Handle Contestable Claims, Chronic Illness Rider Claims, and Depositions.  Provide discovery documents to legal and testify in court as required.
  • Handle Department of Insurance Complaints, New Law Triage Review, HIV Positive processing, appeal letters, and Concentrix Reinstatements
  • Communicate the status of projects, underwriting quality, and efficiency within underwriting team with the Everlake leadership team.  ​​​​​​

Qualifications:
Education, Experience & Skills:
 
  • 10+ years underwriting experience
  • Experience reviewing cases with approval authority up to $2,000,000 through table 16, all ages
  • Advanced medical and financial underwriting knowledge
  • History of mentoring other underwriters and providing 2nd approvals
  • History of participating in projects and/or initiatives relating to various underwriting functions
  • Knowledge of state regulations and how they impact underwriting guidelines and processes
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced problem-solving ability and attention to detail
  • Ability to work both individually and as a team to accomplish goals
  • EKG authority is a plus
  • FLMI, CLU, or ALU certifications or progress towards these certifications is a plus
