Job Summary: The Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting homeowners’ insurance policies and establishing appropriate premiums according to established authority and guidelines as provided under Company Policies and in compliance with current legislation. This role requires excellent customer service skills to enhance relationships with agents.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review inspections, process changes, process cancellations and non-renewals.
- Analyze new and existing personal lines business to evaluate degree of risk and potential exposure.
- Obtain additional information about an applicant to determine coverage needs.
- Determine the level of risk for insuring.
- Offer recommendations on whether to approve an application.
- Help agents determine premium costs.
- Evaluate insurance claims for accuracy and the coverage amount.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
- High School diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred, or relevant experience may be substituted.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in the Property and Casualty insurance industry required with 1-2 years of personal lines underwriting experience preferred.
- In-depth understanding of insurance coverage.
- Ability to make complex decisions using critical thinking skills in the acceptance and rejection of risk according to established guidelines and authority.
- Technical underwriting knowledge and skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products and internet research tools.
- Ability and desire to deliver exceptional customer service.
