Description
LEGISLATIVE REPORTING INTERN, THE TEXAS NEWSROOM

This internship is an opportunity to cover the 2022 Texas legislative session alongside veteran editors and reporters. The intern will learn about policymaking and craft daily stories for radio and digital audiences in Texas and, via NPR, across the country.

We are seeking a college student in the Austin area who is passionate about covering the issues that deeply affect Texans’ lives – and how lawmakers are addressing those topics. Our previous interns and fellows have reported on everything from abortion legislation to proposals to change the way Texans vote to bills filed in response to the state’s catastrophic winter storm.

The fellow will be matched with a mentor and will have the opportunity to attend workshops on topics like audio editing and political reporting.

Fellowship dates: Jan. 17 to May 31, 2023.

This position is seasonal and part-time. It is not eligible for benefits. The position is FLSA classified as non-exempt and directly reports to the Statewide Senior Editor, TTN.

WHO WE ARE:
The Texas Newsroom is the collaboration among NPR and public radio stations in Texas, including KUT Austin, KERA North Texas, Houston Public Media and Texas Public Radio in San Antonio. As we seek to recognize and reflect the increasing diversity among our audiences, we encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and with diverse perspectives to consider employment opportunities with The Texas Newsroom.

The position is based in Austin, and the intern will be employed by KERA, the public broadcasting organization for Dallas/Fort Worth. For more than 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a destination for community engagement and lifelong learning.
