Summary: This position will work closely with IBHS scientists and engineers in the planning and execution of research projects at the IBHS Research Center in South Carolina, with external research partners, and field research projects related to the strategic goals identified by the Research Advisory Council (RAC). This position will conceptualize, plan, execute, and provide guidance for construction and instrumentation of laboratory and field research projects for wind and other natural perils where IBHS conducts active research.
Duties include project planning and execution, data quality control and assurance, analysis, writing of technical reports and presentation of research results based on outcomes from projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:- Develop research project scope, communicate scope to production leaders and research team.
- Works collaboratively with the production team on fabrication, instrumentation, specimen configuration, and testing for experimental research projects, effectively communicating detailed instructions through written correspondence and verbal communication.
- Develop test plans and schedules, execute testing, and coordinate with internal staff and external vendors to resolve technical issues.
- Conduct experimental testing using standard or custom-designed equipment as required to meet project objectives. Testing could include but is not limited to: full-scale building system testing or individual building component testing, for wind load, wind driven rain, hail impacts, or wildfire.
- Ensure effective and complete documentation of all testing procedures, test configurations, data formats, and quality assurance.
- Synthesize results and generate reports.
- Participate or lead IBHS field campaigns to assess the performance of buildings and structures impacted by a major natural or man-made hazard event.
- Plan and execute projects that focus on examining the performance of and methods for protecting the built environment when subjected to wind, wind driven rain or other perils.
- Provide input for developing innovative solutions to unique problems through measurement and analysis for hazard-specific research.
- Develop/determine analysis methodologies, appropriate scripts, and other custom applications to analyze experimental datasets, in situ field observations, and other real-world data sources to synthesize results.
- Disseminate research results through written reports, journal papers or presentations to a variety of stakeholders.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no current supervisory responsibilities. There is a potential for future supervisory responsibilities as the institute grows.
Qualifications:
Education: Master’s degree in engineering or related scientific field; Ph.D. preferred.
Experience: Two (2) or more years’ experience working in an experimental testing or research environment.
Skills:- Self-directed, with strong problem solving and time management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Adaptable and willingness to work on a variety of different projects within various building science research programs in a variety of technical subject areas
- Experience with tests related to performance of construction materials and assemblies
- Experience in risk or catastrophe modeling of natural hazards
- Experience in building aerodynamics and structural testing related to wind loads
- Experience in event-based data collection and damage surveys
- Knowledge of common construction materials and how buildings are constructed.
- Experience using engineering programing languages (e.g. Fortran, Matlab, Python, C++, Java); to analyze large data sets and/or solve scientific problems
- Experience with instrumentation and measurement systems
- Experience with Labview, Linux, or conducting computational simulations such as, Numerical Weather Prediction models, LES, FEA or CFD
