KERA ARTS INTERN – SPRING 2023

KERA is looking for an Arts Intern to work with our Arts journalism team.

WHO WE ARE:
KERA reaches more than 2 million people weekly through KERA TV, KERA News, KXT and Art&Seek. For more than 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a destination for trusted educational programming and initiatives, community engagement and lifelong learning.

As we seek to recognize and reflect the increasing diversity among our audiences, we encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and with diverse perspectives to consider employment opportunities at KERA.

POSITION SUMMARY
Do you regularly refer friends to The Daily episodes or begin conversations with “I heard this story on NPR…”? Do you have a love for the arts, music and culture and want to share it?  Can you work independently on a variety of tasks – and get them all done? If you said “yes” – and you’re a student with aspirations of a media career – you might just be the Arts Intern KERA is looking for.

Each semester KERA provides one Arts intern with valuable experience in arts journalism and a chance to dive deep into the arts scene in Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton. You will get to work with award-winning journalists and help shape arts stories for the web and radio.

This position is FLSA classified as non-exempt, and will report directly to the VP, Arts.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
  • Conduct interviews with local and national artists, actors, musicians and filmmakers
  • Report on arts related events and issues
  • Draft web posts based on your interviews and reporting
  • Update the arts calendar
  • Post on social media accounts
  • Collect sound for radio pieces
  • Uphold and advance KERA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL:
Qualified applicants must be current students (in an accredited degree program) or have graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship.

You must have some knowledge of public radio, be familiar with the Arts&Culture section of keranews.org, and have strong, proven writing and editing skills with a solid understanding of AP style. Audio editing experience, previous experience working for a daily news organization and knowledge of social media practices are not required but are preferred.

PAY:
$16 per hour paid on a bi-weekly pay period. Interns can expect to work 15-20 hours per week.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:
The internship is based in Dallas/Fort Worth, but interns can work a hybrid schedule. We can accommodate some fully remote internships depending on individual circumstances. Interns should have some availability between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Hours are flexible, and we’ll work with you to accommodate class schedules.

The internship will begin around January 23, 2023 and end May 12, 2023. There may be opportunities to extend the internship into the Summer 2023 term.

HOW TO APPLY:
Complete the application on KERA’s employment page and attach a resume and cover letter. Your cover letter should include three sample pitches for arts/culture related stories as well as links to samples of your written news stories, audio stories, photography or video work. Please also share how you found out about this position.

The application deadline is November 30th. Applications that are incomplete will not be accepted.
