The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education­-to-­employment pipeline in underserved Bronx neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16­-24 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 1,900 students. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cyber security, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design.

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Program Design and Implementation, The Teaching and Learning Specialist will be responsible for coordinating, developing curricula for, and delivering custom programs and providing administrative support to the Teaching and Learning team. They will be primarily responsible for the following activities. These include, but are not limited to:

Teaching and Learning Administrative Support  (20%)
  • Support with project management of Teaching and Learning ( T&L) team special projects.
  • Assist with maintaining the T&L Calendar, Keeper Password Manager, Asana Projects, and other T&L digital resources.
  • Take notes, organize resources, and send recaps for meetings related to Teaching and Learning (e.g. T&L Weekly Meeting, Track Meetings, Program Team Step Back), as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain LMS ahead of each fellowship cohort to maintain an orderly and functional digital learning tool.
  • Set up and monitor instructor and fellow access to LMS for each IF track and KKCF cohort.
  • Share and update program-wide resources for fellows in LMS (e.g. weekly feedback survey link, program calendar, Student Success Handbook, etc.).
  • Assist with updating the Student Success Handbook annually and as-needed to account for modifications to student-facing TKH policies.
  • Assist with the annual set up of Slack workspaces and channels for KKCF and IF cohorts.
Custom Program Coordination  (40%)
  • Own coordination of custom programs, including scheduling, staffing, content delivery, workshop format, data collection, and communication with partners.
  • Develop and iterate systems and best practices to facilitate effective planning and execution of custom programs.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach, Recruitment, and Community Engagement Team, and Development and External Affairs team establish strong communication practices with new workshop partners.
  • Act as main point of contact for on-the-ground custom program TKH & partner staff.
  • Maintain records to enable easy reporting on custom program engagements (e.g. partner, attendance, learner profile, hours of service, student outcomes and media).
  • Solicit feedback from students, staff, and other stakeholders for each custom program instance to support continuous improvement.
  • Assist the development team with reporting on program requirements and outcomes.
  • Participate in hiring instructors for custom programs with the support of the Manager of Curricula and Instruction, Director of Programs, and Associate Director of Program Design and Implementation.
  • Train and coach custom program teachers, prioritizing Alumni, as needed.
  • Conduct observations of custom programs and follow up responsively to provide feedback to custom program instructors hired by TKH and elevate needs to TKH colleagues and partners.
  • Work with Associate Director of Program Design and Implementation to scope and implement custom programs.
 
Custom Program Curriculum Development & Instruction (40%)
  • Prepare curricula for custom programs and partners, including modified versions of existing content tailored to specific learner profiles and development of new and unique content.
  • Review instructional resources and observe custom programs regularly, and provide feedback to instructors for instructional and classroom management improvement.
  • Teach remote and local in-person custom programs and digital literacy workshops (including Digital Literacy workshops as part of the fellowship recruitment process).​​​​​​
 
Experience
  • 2+ years of professional or academic  experience in education, social services,  technology or relevant field is required.
  • 3+ years experience teaching STEM topics  in virtual and in-person environments with  teens, young adults, and senior citizen learners is required. 
  • 2+ years experience developing curricula for STEAM topics is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively and maintaining strong relationships  with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field and/or Bootcamp completion is a plus.
  • Experience with eLearning, computer-enhanced teaching, and blended learning approaches preferred.
  • Proficient in HTML and CSS
  • Proficient in JavaScript ES7&8
  • Proficient in HTML and CSS
  • Experience with Python is a plus
  • Experience with React / React Native is a plus
  • Experience with Node, NPM, and Express JS is a plus

As a growing organization, we expect that the specific needs and job description will shift over time and other duties may be assigned by the Associate Director of Program Design and Implementation. A flexible and curious mindset will be essential for success.
 
The salary range for this role will be between $55K - $60K. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, a 2% 401k match, a monthly tech stipend, and unlimited days of paid time off.
